Beavers Escape Moorhead With Slim Win

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon men's squad came into Friday's Go Pink Night contest tied with Bemidji State University in the latest NSIC standings. The Dragons and Beavers took the game down to a last minute shot as the Beavers escaped Moorhead with a last second win 79-75.

The Beavers led for most of the first half but the Dragons never let the lead get to double digits and kept most it to one possession. After the Beavers extended the lead to eight, the largest of the first half, the Dragons began to once again climb back into the game.

Senior Jerome Nelson and sophomore Dennis Williamson both aided the Dragons come back as each player posted 11 points in the first half. Sophomore and leading scorer Jake Driscoll hit a pair of three-point jump shots to tie the game with 1:45 left and 41 seconds left to give the Dragons a three-point lead for the first time in the game. The Beavers hit a late jumper to pull with in one of the Dragons, losing 36-35 at halftime.

After a quick jumper by Seth Haake who finished with 30 points on the night to give the Beavers a one-point lead, sophomore Andrew VanHavermaet hit a three-point jumper to regain the lead. VanHavermaet, who did not attempt a field goal in the first half, hit six three-point jumpers in the second half. VanHavermaet went 6-9 on the night, only taking one shot inside of the arc.

The Dragons would stretch the lead to nine on the strength of two VanHavermaet three-pointers. The Beavers would begin to chip away at the lead and regain it half way through the second half. The Dragons kept the game with in two possessions through the rest of the half. After a Pat Cassidy missed free throw, Driscoll drove down the lane for a last second lay up but the shot fell short and the Beavers hit a pair of free throws with one second remaining to seal the win.

The loss drops the Dragons record to 7-16 on the season (4-12 NSIC) and the Beavers do their part to crack the top-10 in the NSIC standings with an 8-14 record on the season (5-11 NSIC). The Dragons look to rebound when the team takes on the Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth at 8 p.m. inside Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse. The game will host Senior Night as the MSUM Dragons honor seniors Jerome Nelson, Andrew Thompson and Dwayne Hardy.
