MOORHEAD, Minn. - It was a great day for the Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team as they picked up two wins and witnessed a rarity among statistics in the sport as senior
Laura Tvrdik (Farwell, Minn.) became the ninth Dragon all-time to join the 1,000 Kill Club.
The Dragons won their first match of the day over Sioux Falls, and picked up their second win on day two of the Dragon Classic sponsored by the Fairfield Inn by Marriott over Minot State, 3-1.
Tvrdik becomes the ninth Dragon to reach the mark and first since Megan Norling did in 2008. In her career, she is averaging 2.97 kills per set, after ending the match with 1,008 total. She tallied 250 in her rookie campaign and notched 323 and 362 in the last two consecutive seasons. Tvrdik is now 30 kills away from eclipsing the number eight slot for most kills by a Dragon in a career.
The magic kill to move Tvrdik over the 1,000 mark came in the second set to put the Dragons up 8-2. This sparked a big streak of kills by the Dragons as they ended the set with 15 kills, tying the match at 1. Minot State had taken the first set, 25-117.
MSU Moorhead handily took sets three and four to pick up the match win. The team hit .289, the best percentage of the season as they picked up 56 kills. The defense also had 58 digs and four block assists.
Tvrdik and
Heidi Lensing (Belgrade, Minn.) led the Dragons both with 13 kills in the match. Tvrdik assisted on two blocks. Middle blockers
Kayla Handevidt (Esko, Minn.) and
Ashley Feldman (Baudette, Minn.) also chipped in with eight kills a piece.
Katy Ness (Ada, Minn.) led the team on defense with 18 digs.
Leigh Splittstoesser (Stewartville, Minn.) had 33 assists in the match.
The Dragons are now 4-4 overall and will open conference play at home on Tuesday, Sept. 14 against Minnesota-Crookston. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. at Alex Nemzek Hall.
