Strong Second Half Aids Dragons In Season Sweep of Golden Eagles

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. - Forty second half points helped the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon women's basketball team overcome their first half deficit to the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles, to pick up their tenth win of the season on Saturday evening at Alex Nemek Fieldhouse, 64-60.

In similar fashion to the first time these two teams faced off this season, the Dragons took the lead in the final five minutes of the game to pick up the win. The team's last saw each other on Dec. 11 in Crookston, where the Dragons took a two point win (64-62) over the Golden Eagles. ?

In Saturday's game at home, the Golden Eagles built a nine point lead in the first seven minutes of the game. The team was aided by Brittani Wiese who put up six of her 12 points in the game in the time frame.??

MSUM responded and came within one point with three minutes left in the first half, but a three-pointer by Gina Jaroszewski and a jumper by Jamie Zelinsky gave the Golden Eagles a six point lead at half, 30-24.

In the second half, the Dragons tied the game twice in the first three minutes but did not take their first lead of the game until there was 3:10 left to play. To take the lead, the Dragons went on a 13-4 run that began at the 5:28 mark, which was filled with three-pointers by each Marisa Yernatich, Betsy Dickson and Brittany Mayclin.

Mayclin would hit two free throws before Morgan Zabel capped the run with a jumper with 3:10 left to play.

The team held the lead the rest of the game as UMC put up only two more points which cut the Dragons lead from 6-to-4 in the final twenty seconds of play.??

Mayclin ended the night leading the Dragons with 15 points. She also had five rebounds and three assists. Megan Strese picked up 10 for the Red and White, while she grabbed five boards.

One of the biggest differences in the second half came in rebounding the ball, as the Dragons grabbed 14 more boards than the Golden Eagles (27-14). In the first half MSUM had 19 boards while UMC had 17.??

Zabel led the rebounding efforts for the Dragons as she grabbed career-high 13 rebounds, 11 coming in the second half. She also scored four points, had five steals and two assists. Dickson had 10 rebounds in the game, while Angie Jetvig had six. ?

MSUM moves to 7-7 in league play, eighth in the league standings and 10-8 overall. UMC now sits at 8-10 overall and 5-9 in the NSIC.??

The Dragons will go on the road next weekend and travel to Northern State (S.D.) on Friday and play at U-Mary (N.D.) on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to tip-off a 6 p.m.
