MOORHEAD, Minn. – Junior scoring leader
Angie Jetvig sparked the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team to come back from a 14-point deficit to top the University of Mary Marauders (N.D.) on Saturday at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse as the Dragons were victorious, 71-63.
Jetvig scored four of the team's first six points in the game after the Marauders held the Dragons scoreless for the first five and a quarter minutes, taking an early 14-0 lead. MSUM then continued to score 14 more points while U-Mary scored eight to move the score to 22-20 at the seven-minute mark in the first half.
The Dragons took their first lead of the game at the 4:51 mark in the first half on a jumper by
Haley Thomforde. The remainder of the first half was a battle for both teams as U-Mary held a 33-29 edge at halftime.
Marisa Yernatich led the charge in the second half for the Dragons as she scored 15 of her team leading 18 points in the second half as she went 5-of-6 from behind the arc. She had six three-pointers in the game, just one shy of her individual game school record of seven she set her freshman season.
The Dragons took the lead for good in the second half at the 13:14 mark off of one of Yernatich's three's, that was followed by another three-pointer from the sophomore to give the Dragons a four point edge.
MSUM held U-Mary to shooting 1-of-16 from behind the three-point line, for 6.3 percent, while the home team went 10-for-26 shooting 38.5 percent. The team also outrebounded their opponent grabbing 35 boards to the Marauders 26.
Yernatich who also had three rebounds with her team leading 18 points led the Dragons. Thomforde finished the night with 13 points while she grabbed three boards and had three assists.
Betsy Dickson had 12 points and Jetvig had 11 to cap the win.
The Dragons will be on the court again on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. when they host Northern State at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse. The game will be aired live on MidCo Sports Network, channel 26 in the Fargo-Moorhead area on Midcontinent cable service.
