MOORHEAD, Minn. - Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball was handed a tough loss in the exhibition season opener at South Dakota State University this Sunday, falling 85-52.
The Dragons' only lead came on
Angie Jetvig's opening basket of the game, where SDSU followed with a 15-point run. MSUM did not see a lead for the remainder of the competition, falling behind 18 points at the half
Jetvig, the reigning MSUM Female Athlete of the Year, paced MSUM with 23 points, shooting 7 for 9 from the field. The other Dragon starters were only able to add a combined 14 points, and no other Dragon scored over 8 total points.
MSUM were strong from the free-throw line, finishing the game shooting 18-24, 75 percent. The Dragons were outshot 68 to 39 from the field and 26 to 12 from the three-point stripe, finishing the afternoon 14-for-39 from the field, 35.9 percent, and 6-for-12, 50 percent, from three.
The 33 turnovers reflected the youth of the Dragon squad in relation to the 12 committed by the upper-class dominated Jackrabbits.
SDSU were paced by double-digit scoring from four of their starting five, led by senior forward Jennie Sunnaborg's team leading 17 points and 6 rebounds.
The Dragon women will host Valley City State University November 15 at 6 p.m. in Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
