Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. - Southwest Minnesota State bolted to a 24-0 halftime spread and solved a three-game losing streak with a 45-13 victory over Minnesota State Moorhead in a Saturday afternoon Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference showdown at Alex Nemzek Stadium in Moorhead.
Heroes were in plentiful supply for the Mustangs, including the runningback tandem of Warren Matthews and Gannon Moore that torched the Dragons for 315 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Matthews produced 161 yards rushing with a touchdown in 23 carries while Moore supplied 153 yards and two TDs on 19 attempts. Tyler Peschong completed 15 of 21 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns for the Mustangs, and also rushed for another score. Peschong tossed scoring strikes to Cody Condon (3) and Jarred Carlson (42).
Southwest State limited the MSU Moorhead offense to 232 yards and just 63 yards in 29 rushing attempts. It marked the Mustangs' fourth straight victory over MSU Moorhead in a series that dates to 1970.
Kevin Koch completed 13 of 21 passes for 169 yards fore the Dragons, including a 23-yard touchdown pass to
Kendall Hendon, and scored on a five-yard run as well. Inside linebacker
Jeff Schuette topped the Dragon defensive chart with 16 tackles, including three unassisted stops, while
Lomumba Ismail and
Tyler Brody recorded 15 tackles each. Levi Reiff and Phil Breidall had nine tackles each for the Mustangs, 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the NSIC.
MSU Moorhead, 2-4 overall and 1-4 in the NSIC, motors to Bemidji next Saturday for a 1 p.m. showdown with nationally ranked Bemidji State.
