MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team handed Jamestown College a 40-3 loss at Jamestown, Thursday night. The Dragons look to carry the momentum into the Cobber Open, Saturday.
The Dragons started strong and would not let up throughout the night. Senior
Matt Wuorinen set the tone by putting 133-pound opponent Daniel Taylor on his back to pin him, 2 minutes and 51 seconds in. Senior
Tyler Steinwand earned the second victory of the night for the Dragons due to a forfeit in the 141-weight class, setting the score at 12-0.
Freshman
Derek Lee looked to continue the success of the Dragons as he built a 4-0 lead in the first three minutes of the match. 149-pound Zach Pickering took only 15 seconds to gain the lead. Pickering took one move to nearly pin Lee and went on to take a 9-8 decision, the only points for the Jimmies on the night.
Despite the loss junior
Kerron Williams came back during the next match and earned a decision over Jaykob Miller. The win by the 157-pound Williams sent the Dragons on their way to sweep the rest of the matches.
Junior
Jacob Bennett, the third-place finisher in the 165 class at the Bison Open, followed Williams's lead and earned a 7-5 decision over Michael Nord. Junior
Trent Sovde and sophomore
Kody Kalkbrenner also earned decisions of 6-4 and 11-9, respectively. The 174-pound Sovde defeated the Jimmies' Pat Nord. 184-pound Kalkbrenner earned the Dragons sixth win of the night over Drew Moch.
Sophomore
Brandon Manderschied ended the decision streak of the Dragons by earning a 14-2 major decision over his 197-pound opponent Antonio Lopez. The Dragons' lone heavyweight
Gerad Fugleberg recorded the second pin of the night for MSUM. The sophomore pinned the 285-pound Gary Blair in just 52 seconds.
The 125-pound
Corey Ulmer, the Dragons second third-place finisher at the Bison Open, wrapped up the matches on the night. The senior earned six points for the Dragons by a forfeit.
The Dragons will be in action Saturday at the Cobber Open. Teams taking place in the events include Concordia, University of Minnesota, North Dakota State University, Northern Iowa and St. Cloud State. The tournament will take place inside the Memorial Auditorium on the Concordia campus starting at 9 a.m.
