MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon women's and men's basketball team host their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home-stand this weekend against Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota, Duluth. The Dragons will face the Beavers on Friday with action starting at 6 p.m. and the Bulldogs on Saturday at 6 p.m.
DRAGON WOMEN
The MSU Moorhead Dragon women's basketball team (2-1) returns to Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse after going 1-1 this last weekend in the Montana State University, Billings tournament.
The Dragons lost Friday night's battle to Montana State University, Northern, 65-61, and defeated Montana State University, Billings, 78-71, on Saturday, Nov. 26.
Senior forward
Angie Jetvig led the team both nights. Jetvig led all scorers hitting 7-of-15 shots giving her a total of 17 points and seven rebounds in Friday night's bout. With a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds, Jetvig led the Dragons to a close victory on Saturday. The performance from Jetvig landed her on the Yellowjacket Classic All-Tournament team.
Sophomore forwards
Megan Strese and
Morgan Zabel followed behind Jetvig both games. Strese contributed 9 points and 9 rebounds in Friday night's game and 16 points and 8 rebounds in Saturday night's win. Zabel had 7 points and 11 rebounds on Friday and 14 points and 4 rebounds on Saturday.
BEMIDJI WOMEN
The Beavers currently are 2-2 on the season. This marks the first NSIC games of the season for both the Dragons and the Beavers. BSU comes into this game after suffering two loses last weekend in the Nova Southeastern Thanksgiving Classic.
On Friday, Nov. 25 the Beavers were defeated, 73-45, by Nova Southeastern and on Saturday, Nov. 26 they fell to Palm Beach Atlantic, 73-57.
Last season the Beavers and Dragon women met twice. MSUM took the win in both meetings. On Dec. 3, 2010 the Dragons won big in Bemidji, 74-46. On Feb. 12, 2011 MSU Moorhead hailed victorious on their home court, 84-74.
The Beavers are led in scoring by sophomore Kate Warmack. The 6'2” center is averaging 14 points a game. Sophomore guard Morgan Lee, who is putting up just over 12 points a night, follows Warmack closely.
DULUTH WOMEN
The University of Minnesota, Duluth Bulldogs (3-1) travel to Moorhead to face the Dragons after a 74-54 victory over Wisconsin-Superior on Nov. 22.
Last season, the Dragons defeated the Bulldogs in both their meetings. UMD fell 76-71 on Dec. 4, 2010 in Duluth and 67-65 on Feb. 12, 2011 in Moorhead.
Sophomore forward Katrina Newman leads the Bulldogs in scoring and rebounds with 15.5 points per game and 8.8 rebounds per game. Junior guard Courtney Douchette is close behind Newman with 15.3 points per game and she leads the team in steals with 1.3 per game.
DRAGON MEN
The MSU Moorhead Dragons men's basketball team (3-0) comes into their first NSIC face-off after a huge 96-56 victory over Concordia College in Moorhead.
In this game the Dragon men broke a school record by hitting 19 three-pointers as a team. The previous record of 16 three-pointers in one game was set in 2007 against Presentation College.
In the Dragons win over Concordia many players were involved in the effort.
Charlie Chapman and
Jake Lindfors led all scorers with 20 points apiece. Chapman went 6-8 from the three-point line and Lindfors added 5 rebounds.
Senior guard
DJ Hamilton also added 16 points and 9 assists. Freshman guard Jordan Riewers followed behind Hamilton with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
Lindfors leads the men with an average of 18 points a game and is second in rebounds with 7.7 per game. Behind Lindfors are Hamilton and Chapman with 14 points per game. Hamilton also leads the team in assists with 5.7 per game.
BEMIDJI MEN
The Bemidji State Beavers (5-1) are coming off two victories this weekend. During the Inn Keepers Beaver Classic, held in Bemidji, the Beavers defeated Minot State University on Nov. 25, 74-45, and Michigan Tech on Nov. 26, 63-58.
Senior forward James Ellisor is the leader of the Beaver team with 21 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per game. The 6'5” forward is a tough player, but will match up nicely with Dragon forwards Lindfors and
Alex Novak.
Senior guard Bryce Tesdahl is behind Ellisor with 9.3 points per game, 4.3 assists and 4.2 rebounds.
Last season these teams met twice with the Dragons taking home both games. On Dec. 3, 2010 MSUM defeated the Beavers, 60-58, in Bemidji and 70-62 in Moorhead on Feb. 12, 2011.
DULUTH MEN
The University of Minnesota, Duluth Bulldogs men's basketball team (3-1) also is facing off in their first NSIC weekend. The Bulldogs most recently defeated Wisconsin-Superior, 74-54, on Nov. 22.
Ryan Rasmussen and Jake Hotten lead the Bulldogs. Rasmussen is number one on the team with an average of 20.8 points per game. Hotten is right behind him with 17.3 points per game and leads the team in rebounds with 8.5 per game.
Last year the Dragons split two games with the Bulldogs with each team winning on their home court. On Dec. 4, 2010 UMD defeated MSUM in a close battle, 71-70. However, the Dragons got their revenge when they defeated the Bulldogs, 93-72, on Feb. 11, 2011.
