Moorhead, Minn. – The Dragon women's basketball team's two-game winning streak came to an end tonight at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse with a 67-59 loss to the University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagles. With this loss, the Dragons move to 4-and-3 on the season, 1-and-2 in the NSIC.
The game was defined by one-shot possessions for both teams, with offensive rebounds almost non-existent. The Dragons, who have played strong on the boards all season, had 47 total rebounds against UMC; however, only 10 were on offense.
As a result, Dragons struggled to establish a rhythm on offense, taking over six minutes to score double digits off a Marisa Yernatich 3-pointer, which moved the Dragons up 10-3. Yernatich led all Dragons in scoring the first half, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, and 3-for-3 from the 3-point line for a total of 11 points; however, she did not score another point the rest of the competition.
Turnovers further hampered any Dragon effort at establishing momentum, as they committed 24 turnovers, with 15 coming in the first half.
UMC also had trouble finding their offensive identity during the first half, paced by Brittani Wiese, this week's NSIC player of the week. Although she only made two 3-pointers during the half, they both were at key moments to stifle great plays by the Dragons and allowed UMC to regain the lead. Wiese finished the game with 21 points, shooting 6-for-14 from the field, 2-for-4 from three, and 7-for-10 from the free-throw line.
As the Dragons' difficulties continued, the second half was defined by two key events. The Dragons only scored three points in over a seven-minute span, allowing the Golden Eagles to take the lead they would not lose with over four minutes remaining. With just over one minute in regulation, the Dragons fouled every Golden Eagle possession; however, UMC shot 11-for-14 from the free throw line and the Dragons could only get within five points.
MSUM finished the game 21-for-57, 36.8%, from the field, 4-for-14, 28.6%, from three, and 13-for-15, 86.7%, from the free throw line. The Dragons were led by Angie Jetvig's double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
UMC shot 18-for-61, 29.5%, from the field, 7-for-25, 28%, from three, and 24-for-35, 68.6%, from the free throw line.
The Dragons will travel to Wayne Nebraska on December 17 to play the Wayne State College Wildcats at 6:00 pm.
