Jetvig Sets Career High in 71-55 Victory Over Minot State

Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. - Senior Angie Jetvig set a new personal high in the post while leading the Minnesota State Unversity Moorhead women's basketball team to a 71-55 win at home Tuesday night against future Northern Sun Conference member Minot State.

It took a minute into the game before the first points were recorded as Haley Thomforde dished the ball to Kaycee Charette. Charette took the pass and converted it into a three-pointer.  A no-look pass from Haley Thomforde to Megan Strese in the post capped a 7-2 run through the first three minutes.  Katie Hardy of Minot State answered the nice pass from Thomforde by hitting a shot from the right with one second left on the shot clock.  A couple of free throws and field goals from the Dragons was enough to hold the lead through eight minutes of play.  Australian Christina Boag stole the lead from MSUM with a three-pointer assisted by her sister, Carly Boag.

An 11-0 run against the Dragons would be ended by a wide-open Angie Jetvig shot, making the score 17-16 in favor of the Beavers.  Following a basket by Carly Boag, the Dragons began a run to put the home team back on top.  The Red and White of Moorhead put together an 18-3 run over nearly seven minutes only surrendering three free throws.  The run was highlighted by a spin move from Angela Christianson in the paint to make the score 36-24 for the Dragons.  Two three-pointers from Minot State, including a buzzer beater from Lauren Safranski, would cap the half with a score of 38-30 in favor of the home team.

Opening the second half was Safranski as she put down two free throws.  The points were answered quickly by Charette as she faked a pass inside and knocked down a three-pointer.  Jetvig put the Dragons lead into double-digits with a tough hook shot from the post.  Pressure from Minot State would be applied to MSUM as the visitors put on the half-court trap.  Bringing the deficit below 10 would be the Beavers' Sacarra Molina as she hit a three-pointer from the top of the key.  Jetvig again set the lead at 11 by hitting another shot from the post.  Through three-quarters of the game, Jetvig is 8-of-10 from the field while leading the Dragons to a 52-41 lead.

A media timeout capped two minutes of sloppy play from both squads as turnovers and missed shots riddled Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.  Strese at the free-throw line ended the drought which was answered quickly by an April Nakatani pass to Carly Boag for a layup.    Ball movement from Jetvig to Charette and ending in the hands of Thomforde resulted in a three-pointer from the Dragons point guard.   The Beavers answered the execution of the Dragons with a three of their own, making the score 59-46.  More post work from Jetvig gave her 27 points, 1 point short of her career high, with 6 minutes remaining in the game.    At the foul line with 2:46 left, Jetvig was put in an opportunity to break her previous career high from Feb. 5 against University of Mary. The Hawley native would not be denied of a new personal best as she hit both free throws. The Beavers' pace of scoring would not be enough to bring down the lead of the Dragons.  Free throws from Taylor Shepard ended the night of scoring for the Dragons as the home team took the win, 71-55.

The Dragons finished the game by shooting 22-of-50 (44%) from the field and an impressive 22-of-27 (81.5%) from the charity stripe.  A complete team effort from the Dragons was utilized as the home team totaled 15 assists.

The Beavers shooting on the night was not as successful as their counterpart as the visitors shot 20-of-59 (33.9%) from the field.  The largest lead Minot State could take was three points back with 11 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Papa John's Player of the Game senior Angie Jetvig totaled 29 points, a new career high, and seven rebounds.  Jetvig was perfect from the free throw line by hitting nine of nine.  Following Jetvig in scoring was the other post presence for the Dragons, Megan Strese with 12 points.  Tied in rebounds with Jetvig was sophomore Morgan Zabel at seven.

Steve d'Eustachio's stat of the game: The Dragon women have won 12 non-conference games in a row at home.  Their last non-conference loss at Nemzek was Nov. 24, 2007 versus current women's head coach Karla Nelson's alma mater, the University of North Dakota.

The Dragons women will host Minnesota Crookston on Saturday to start a doubleheader with the Dragon men, starting at 4 p.m.
