Chapman's Three's Lead Dragons in Comeback Over Beavers, MSUM Wins 70-62

MOORHEAD, Minn. - Junior Charlie Chapman hit four-three pointers mid-way through the second half to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons charge to comeback to top the Bemidji State Beavers, 70-62, Saturday at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.

The Beavers scored the first ten points in the ball game holding the Dragons scoreless in the first three minutes of the game. The Beavers shot 45 percent in the first half, hitting 13 of 29 shots, grabbing five offensive rebounds that led to six second chance points. BSU led at half 32-28.

The Dragons cut the Beavers lead from nine points at 2:01 in the first half, to four points prior to intermission on a three pointer by Jake Driscoll and two free-throws by DJ Hamilton.

MSUM came out of intermission pushing the Beavers by cutting their lead to three before the visitors came back to lead by nine at 14:09.

Two minutes later, Xavier Reed grabbed a rebound and laid the ball back in the hoop to cut the lead to seven. Chapman subbed into the game and hit a three-pointer in the team's first possession down the court. He hit another long range shot at 11:07 then assisted a three by Hamilton at 10:51 to tie the game for the first time.

The Dragons went up by four on back-to-back three's by Champan, around two free-throws by Bemidji State, but could not hold the lead as the Beavers came back to lead by two with 5:06 left to play.

Driscoll hit his fifth three-pointer of the game in the Dragons next turn down the court, giving MSUM the lead for good.  The team went up by as much as 11 in the final minute of play, but held on to win by eight.

MSUM moves to 13-9 overall and 10-8 in the league, while BSU moves to 8-14 overall and 5-13 in the NSIC.

MSU Moorhead will close out their regular season home games next weekend as they host Winona State on Friday, Feb. 18 and Upper Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 19. The game will be played at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse, with both game scheduled to start at 8 p.m.

Feb. 19 will feature senior night, honoring Chad Thompson as he will finish his career this season. The Dragon Athletics Marketing team will host FILL THE FIELDHOUSE on the same night where there will be more give-aways than ever before at a Dragon event, including a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, sponsored by Valley Imports.
