Warriors Get Even With Dragon Men Despite Late Run

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team struggled to get their offense rolling against the Winona State Warriors Friday night and suffered their ninth Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference loss of the season.

The Warriors came into Nemzek Fieldhouse searching for revenge from their 95-87 loss to the Dragons on Jan. 15.  They would strike first on a pair of jumpers from Jordan Fischer and Kellen Taylor.

Charlie Chapman would give the Dragons their first points of the night on a four-point play by getting fouled and still hitting the three-pointer at the 18:26 mark to bring his team within one, 4-5.

The Warriors would return with a 10-0 run and keep the Dragon's three-point threats quiet the rest of the night, only hitting one more three the rest of the game.

With under a minute to go in the first half, the Warriors would build their lead to as much as 18 points, but a pair of DJ Hamilton free throws would take the Dragons into halftime down 16 points, 42-26.

Chapman would add a jumper and a three-pointer quickly into the second half and Jake Driscoll would drain a basket of his own to bring the Dragons to within 11 points with 17:28 left in the game.

The Dragons would assemble a late 9-0 run to bring the deficit to just six points with 8:51 to go.  The Warriors were ready with a run of their own and would outscore the Dragons 18-6 from that point on to win 74-56.

The loss drops the Dragons to 13-10 overall and 10-9 in NSIC play.

The Dragons will return to Nemzek Fieldhouse Saturday night at 8 p.m. for their last home contest of the season.  The game will be senior night and the men will celebrate the commitment of Chad Thompson to Dragon basketball.

The night has also been deemed the 'Fill the Fieldhouse' night as the Dragons attempt to set an attendance record by giving away an iPad and over $2,000 in prizes throughout the night.  In addition, at halftime of the men's game, Valley Imports will hold their 'Win a Car' contest as nine Dragons fans take their shot at winning an all-new 2011 Volkswagen Jetta.

Saturday's games are also Employee Appreciation Night and will honor all MSU Moorhead employees with a buy-one get-one free ticket.  Everyone in attendance will get a buy-one get-one free burrito from Qdoba.

Tip-off for the men's game is scheduled for 8 p.m. against the Peacocks from Upper Iowa.
