Dragon Women's Basketball Picks Up Win at Home, Tops Warriors 66-51

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. – Three Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon women's basketball players scored in double figures over the Winona State Warriors on Friday evening to pick up the 66-51 win at home.

It took the Dragons ten minute to get into stride as consistency in the end of the first half led to a double-figure win, the team's 13th of the season and 10th in conference play. MSUM is 13-10 overall this season and 10-9 in the league.

The Warriors began the game going up 4-0 before the Dragons' Haley Thomforde hit a three-pointer at 17:58 to put the home team on the scoreboard. WSU would go up by seven (10-3) before the Dragons would tally another point.

MSUM went on a 8-0 run in starting at 15:25 to take their first lead of the game, 13-12. Brittany Mayclin hit a three-pointer while Angie Jetvig followed with an old-fashion three-point play. Megan Strese laid in the bucket that gave the Dragons an edge.

The Warriors came back to put up the next six points, leading the Dragons by five, but it would not hinder the home team's efforts as they came back to tie the game at 18 with 9:33 left in the first half.

The Dragons took the lead back for good at the 9:09 mark on a jumper by Jetvig. MSU Moorhead shot 46.7 percent in the first half and 50 percent from long range. It was that consistency that carried into the second half after leading at the break, 37-30.

In the game, MSUM shot 44.3 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from three and 88.9 percent from the charity stripe.

Jetvig and Mayclin played a large role in the Dragons' shooting percentage as they combined to go for 16-of-29 from the field. Jetvig led all scorers with 20 points, hitting 9 –of-14 from the field. Mayclin had 15 points, while teammate Abby Reiter posted 10 points.

The Dragons kept their rebound margin per game average at up as they had ten more boards than the Warriors. The Dragons grabbed 32 with Betsy Dickson leading the team with seven. She also scored eight points and had two steals.

MSU Moorhead will host Upper Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 19, to close out their regular season home games. The team's are set to tip-off at 6 p.m.

Feb. 19 will feature senior night, honoring both Betsy Dickson and Abby Reiter. The Dragon Athletics Marketing team will host FILL THE FIELDHOUSE that evening where there will be more give-aways than ever before at a Dragon event, including a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, sponsored by Valley Imports, and an Apple iPad.
