ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon women's basketball team fought back in the final minute against the Northern State University Wolves Friday night, but came up just short in the final seconds, 67-64.
The Wolves came into the contest ranked second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, but the Dragons would challenge them every step of the way.
The game began with a
Haley Thomforde steal and assist to
Betsy Dickson for two points to take the early lead.
The lead would bounce back and fourth and would sway the Dragons' way after Dickson added a three-pointer at the 14:05 mark to take a 9-8 lead.
Emily Becken would add a three for the Wolves at the 12:45 mark retake the lead 11-9.
Dickson would add another basket to tie the score 11-11 at the 12 minute mark, but the Wolves Brittany Euerle would break the tie at 11:27 in the first half with a two of her own, 13-11.
The Dragons would hold on to a one point lead, but with 3:58 left in the half Jodi Reinschmidt would add a pair of free throws for the Wolves and give her team a one point lead.
The Wolves would push their lead to seven heading into the halftime break with a pair of Becken free throws, 34-27.
The second half began where the first half left off as the Wolves continued to build their lead. They would quickly grow their advantage to ten after the first minute of the second half.
A ten point Wolves lead turned into a three point Dragons lead with 8:45 left in the game after a
Brittany Mayclin three-pointer, 47-50.
The Wolves would answer immediately and retake the lead 51-50 on an Euerle jumper with just over seven minutes to play.
Again the Wolves would build their lead to ten points with 1:08 left in the game, 64-54.
Angie Jetvig would then begin the Dragon surge with a pair of free throws to cut the lead to eight with 56 seconds left. She would later add back-to-back deep three-pointers to cut the Wolves lead to just one point with :14 on the clock, 65-64.
The Wolves' Jacqee Jasinski would hit a pair of free throws to take a three point lead with seconds left on the clock, 67-64.
The Dragons would push the ball down the court and
Abby Reiter would get a great look at a game-tying three-pointer, but it went in-and-out. The Dragons would however snag the offensive rebound with two seconds left, giving hope for one more try to tie the game.
After a quick inbounds pass, Dickson would take the shot, but it wouldn't fall and the Wolves would take victory from the Dragons, 67-64.
Jetvig would post 21 points and grab nine rebounds in the effort and
Haley Thomforde would add 14 points of her own. The Wolves' Reinschmidt would also post 21 points.
The loss drops the Dragon women to 10-9 overall and 7-8 in the NSIC. The Dragons return to action on Saturday, Feb. 5 against the University of Mary Marauders at 6 p.m. in Bismarck, N.D.
