BISMARCK, N.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team received a career high 28 points from Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference scoring leader
Angie Jetvig, but it wasn't enough to overcome the University of Mary Marauders 38 free throw points as the Dragons fall 84-72.
The Dragons started from behind after the Marauder's Laura Peterson hit a three-pointer ten seconds into the game, but
Morgan Zabel would respond with a three-pointer of her own to level the score at three a piece on the following possession.
At the 13:46 mark the Dragons would notch a seven-point lead after a pair of
Brittany Mayclin free throws, but the Marauders would fight back to take a 22-21 lead with 7:51 remaining in the half.
Jetvig would respond with a quick post move to retake a small lead and add two free throws with 4:53 left in the half to give the Dragons a five point lead.
The Marauders would get a Peterson layup with 2:46 remaining in the first half to swing the score the Marauders' way by two points, 31-29.
The Dragons'
Marisa Yernatich would answer with a big three-pointer with 1:31 left in the half to retake a one point lead, but the Marauders' Lindsey Sand would drain two free throws with nine seconds on the clock to give her team a 37-36 lead at the halfway point.
The Dragons would regain the lead again at the 16:15 mark in the second half after a
Betsy Dickson three, 46-47. Dickson would add another big three-pointer at the 14:23 mark to boost the Dragon lead up to four, 48-52.
The Dragons would hold their lead until Sand hit another pair of free throws to take a 55-54 lead with 12:16 remaining.
The Dragons would battle back to tie the score on two occasions, the last coming off a Jetvig jumper at the 3:22 mark, locking the score 70-70.
The Marauders would take a narrow 73-70 lead after Ali Collins added a free throw and finally a jumper at the 1:48 mark, forcing the Dragons to foul. U-Mary would finish 38 of their 43 free throw attempts in the game to hang on and take the victory, 84-72.
Jetvig would post a career high 28 points in the effort, Dickson would add post 16 points and Zabel tallied 12 points of her own.
The story for the Marauders was Ali Collins' 23 points with 12 coming from the free throw line.
The loss drops the Dragon women to 10-10 overall and 7-9 in NSIC play. The Dragons will return home on Friday, Feb. 11 for their 'Go Pink with the Dragons' event to raise money for the Roger Maris Cancer Center. There will be a rock climbing wall, face painting, balloon animals, silent auction, 'Go Pink' t-shirts, the Red River Boys Choir, the FM Acro II and Acro Lites, the FM Derby Girls, pink uniforms and a Dragons After Dark event following the men's game. Women are set to tip off at 6 p.m.
