ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon women's basketball team's season came to an end on Wednesday night in the first round of the NSIC Sanford Health Tournament, as the Northern State Wolves built an early lead to take the win, 65-56.
It took the Wolves just twelve seconds to go up 3-0, at the start of the game, taking a lead they would not relinquish.
NSU went up by nine in the first three minutes before the Dragons would tally their first points, which came at the 16:05 mark on a lay-up by
Haley Thomforde. The basket sparked a 7-0 run for the Dragons, with
Betsy Dickson and
Abby Reiter each contributing to the run.
The Wolves capitalized on poor shooting by the Dragons in the first half, shooting only 24 percent, while they slowly built up their lead to 16 at halftime, 35-19.
In the second half, the Dragons chipped away the Wolves lead to four, 51-47, on a 11-2 run, starting on a pair of Dickson free-throws and followed by three-three pointers, Thomforde-Dickson-Thomforde.
Krista Rabenberg scored the next seven points for the Wolves, that gave NSU enough of a push to take the win.
The Dragons were tough on the boards as they grabbed 51 rebounds. It was the third time this season when the Dragons have had more than 50 rebounds in a game.
Four Dragons ended the night in double figures, with Thomforde and
Angie Jetvig both leading the team with 13 points. Dickson and
Morgan Zabel each had 11. Dickson and Jetvig both had double-doubles as they grabbed 12 and 10 rebounds each, respectively.
The Dragons ended their season with a 14-13 record, the 11th consecutive winning season for the team. All of which came under the guidance of Head Coach
Karla Nelson, who has been at MSUM for 11 years.
