Simmons, Warriors Spoil Dragons' Home Opener

Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon football team showed improvement Saturday in their home opener against Winona State University, but the Warriors showed why they are among the top teams in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Rayon Simmons rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns while Curtis Dewberry supplied a pair of TDs, including a 75-yard punt return, to spark Winona State University to a 48-10 road victory over Minnesota State University Moorhead in Saturday's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener at Alex Nemzek Stadium.

The Warriors bolted to a 27-0 first half getaway and extended their mastery over the Dragons with their 13th consecutive victory in a series that dates to 1932. Simmons scored on runs for 4, 15, and 1 yard. Winona State backup quarterback Bryan Bradshaw left the WSU bench to complete 10 of 13 passes for 118 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown to Dylan Ulferts. Dewberry and quarterback John Tiegland combined for the game's opening touchdown, a 58-yard scoring strike on the Warriors' second play. Theo Burkett carried seven times for 87 yards and Dewberry had six catches for 98 yards as the Warriors built a 502-304 total offense advantage.

Kevin Koch completed 15 of 25 passes for 181 yards and one touchdown for MSUM while Kendall Hendon turned six receptions into 119 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown catch. Hendon also returned six kickoffs for 131 yards. Wes Kramer provided the Dragons' first score, a 28-yard field goal late in the second period, and averaged 35.0 yards on four punts. Kvamme Bailey and Logan Werlinger were credited with nine tackles each for the Dragons.

Minnesota State Moorhead visits Upper Iowa University next Saturday for a 1 p.m. showdown at Fayette, IA, and celebrates Homecoming against University of Minnesota, Crookston September 24.
