OMAHA, Neb. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon volleyball team opened their 2011 season against Northwest Missouri State University and the University of Nebraska at Omaha Friday on the first day of the UNO Tournament.
In the first match against Northwest Missouri State, the Bearcats topped the Dragons 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 20-25, 25-16).
After falling short the first two sets, the Dragons came back to take the third match by five. The fourth and final set went in favor of the Bearcats 25-16.
Dragon junior outside hitter
Heidi Lensing posted eight kills and eleven digs.
Meredith Egeland also put down eight kills while recording three block assists. Other notable performaces were from
Anna Olson, who charted 38 assists and
Katy Ness with 17 digs.
The second match of the day proved to be a battle to the end, but Nebraska Omaha edged out the MSU Moorhead in five sets, 3-2 (25-23, 12-25, 25-22, 16-25, 15-12).
Freshman outside hitter
Morgan Gradishar lead the Dragons with 17 kills, 10 digs and two block assits. Lensing contributed 13 kills and ten digs.
Ashley Feldman and
Annie Palmquist chipped in 12 kills each. Olson's 55 assists and Ness' 17 digs were key in keeping the score close.
The Dragons continue play in the UNO Tournament tomorrow against the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith at 10 a.m. and Southeastern Oklahoma State University at 4 p.m.
The Dragons are set to host their first home contests of the season during the Tharaldson Classic Tournament September 9-10 in Nemzek Fieldhouse.
