Laqua, Dragons Debut in Style

CHICAGO, Ill.
- Trailing 17-14 early in the fourth quarter, Minnesota State University Moorhead responded with a pair of quick touchdowns and rolled to a 28-17 opening day win over Robert Morris University at Arlington Heights, Ill. on Saturday. The non-conference victory set the stage for the approaching 10-game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference crusade, and also successfully christened the MSUM coaching career of Steve Laqua.

Senior quarterback Kevin Koch tossed four touchdown passes and fueled the Dragon offense with 281 yards passing. Koch completed 22 of 32 passes for 281 yards. Kendall Hendon caught a pair of 10-yard touchdown passes and totaled 123 yards on eight receptions. Shawn Marlowe and Koch combined for the Dragons' first touchdown pass of 16 yards while Alex Pearson had a 27-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter.

"I was excited about how we overcame adversity," said Laqua. "We could have packed it in when we fell behind a couple of times, but we didn't. That shows a a lot about our people and our football team.

E'boni Lucious-West carried 19 times for 100 yards while Brandon Thompson added 78 yards on 13 trips.MSUM piled up a total yard advantage of 481-275.

MSU Moorhead, 1-0 overall, hosts Winona State in its NSIC opner next Saturday.
