MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Dragons earned their second straight victory as Coach Karla Nelson reached her 200th victory with a 60-49 win over the Upper Iowa University Peacocks. This win brings the Dragons to 5-8 overall, 2-7 in the NSIC, while the Peacocks drop to 1-12 overall, 1-8 in the NSIC.
"It's a great night. We've been a little bit of a win," commented Dragon forward Angie Jetvig. "To get a win and get Coach Nelson her 200th win is a great feeling and it really motivates us to do well the rest of the season."
"It's really not about me, it's about the players who came before, the players who are here now, and the players who will be here in the future," Coach Nelson said about achieving her milestone. "It's about the tradition and history of the program."
When asked if she had anything to say about Coach Nelson's win, Jetvig did not hesitate:
"Congratulations coach, you really deserve it!"
After a slow opening ten minutes, the Dragons were able to open up a 19-point lead with just over four minutes remaining, and led 31-20 going into the half. The Dragon posts led all scorers at the half, with Jetvig scoring 10 and Megan Strese with 8.
"I thought we moved the basketball pretty well," Coach Nelson said about the lead going into the half. "We did a really good job of really executing from the inside, and hitting shots from the inside."
UIU scored 5 quick points to start the second half, as Olivia Winkler hit a jump shot off a Laura TerHark steal, and Jeri Jacobson hit a three-pointer to cut the Dragon lead 33-25. "UI dug in a little bit, rebounded, and mixed up their defenses between man and zone," Coach Nelson said about this strong start to the half.
However, as the half progressed, UIU's shooting cooled as they attempted threes almost every possession, finishing the second half 4-for-12, 33.3%, from three. With 1:27 remaining in the game, UIU sank a three to cut into the Dragons' lead, but Jetvig found herself wide open for an easy put back and the Dragon win.
"We have to keep our enthusiasm and keep it going tomorrow," Jetvig said about tonight's win.
MSUM finished the game 22-for-61, 36.1%, from the field, 5-for-21, 23.8%, from three, and 11-for-15, 73.3%, from the free throw line. The Dragons were led in scoring by Jetvig (23), Strese (13), and Morgan Zabel (9).
