Aberdeen, S.D. – Kaycee Charette scored a career-high 25 points, as the MSUM Dragons ended a six-game losing streak with a 72-62 win over the Northern State Wolves at Wachs Arena on Sunday afternoon. This win brings the Dragons to 5-8 overall, 2-7 in the NSIC, while the Wolves drop to 9-6 overall, 5-5 in the NSIC.
Charette led the Dragons' charge during the first half, hitting a high-arcing three-point shot at the top of the key to bring MSUM down one at 10-9. Haley Thomforde hit a turn-around jump shot to tie the game at thirteen to start the Dragon surge. MSUM went on a 22-3 run, capped by Angie Jetvig rejecting an NSU shot and converting the fast-break layup for a 33-18 lead.
Out of a Coach Karla Nelson time out with 22 seconds remaining, the Dragons ran the give and go, as Jetvig scored a layup off a Charette bounce pass, giving the Dragons a 43-25 lead going into the half. The Dragons only had 4 turnovers during the half, finishing with 11 for the game.
MSUM's bench came up strong, scoring 21 points during the first half, as the Dragons shot 18-for-31, 58.1%, and from the field, 6-for-11, 54.5%, while the Wolves were 9-for-26. 34.6%, and 2-for-6, 33.3% from three.
The second half saw a strong NSU surge after the Dragons went up by 19 early at 44-25. The Wolves were able cut the Dragon lead to just 7. Out of a Dragon timeout, Kaycee Charette made a three-pointer to extend the score to 53-43, and Wolves head coach Curt Fredrickson was charged a technical foul. Jetvig hit both free throws and Charette converted another three for a 58-43 lead.
Jetvig scored her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
NSU was able to pull within 2 point, going on a 17-2 run to tie the game at 60; however, the Dragons made 12 out of 14 free throws, finishing the game on a 12-2 run.
MSUM finished the game 22-for-53, 41.5%, from the field, 8-for-19, 42.1%, from three, and 20-for-24, 83.3%, from the free throw line. The Dragons were led in scoring by Charette (25), Jetvig (16), and Thomforde (8).
NSU shot 22-for-56, 39.3%, from the field, 2-for-16, 12.5%, from three, and 16-for-17, 94.1%, from the free throw line. The Wolves had three players score in double-digits: Emily Becken (18), Alison Kusler (11), and Sarah Hintz (10).
The Dragons will be back home at Alex Nemzek fieldhouse this upcoming weekend, playing the Upper Iowa Peacocks on Friday night at 6:00 pm, and Winona State Warriors on Saturday night at 4:00 pm.
