BISMARCK, N.D. -- Senior
Meredith Egeland had 10 kills and six block assists to help the Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team roll to a 25-11, 25-12, 25-12 sweep of the University of Mary in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Thursday night in Bismarck, N.D.
MSUM improved to 14-12 overall and 6-11 in the NSIC with its second straight win, while Mary fell to 3-21 overall and 3-14 in the conference.
Egeland hit an impressive .588 in the match and also was pivotal in helping the Dragons record 11 team blocks. Senior
Heidi Lensing added eight kills, four digs and three block assists, while sophomore
Maggie Gruber added six kills on a .357 hitting percentage. Senior
Anna Olson had 16 set assists and freshman
Casie Baer 14 for MSUM, while senior
Katy Ness had 15 digs.
"It was a great win," MSUM head coach
Tammy Blake said. "I thought our offense tonight was balanced across the board and our setters did a great job controlling the match."
In the first set, MSUM erased an early 2-0 deficit by scoring five straight points -- which included two kills and a block assist from Egeland and a kill and a block assist from Lensing -- to take a 5-2 lead. After Mary closed within 5-4, the Dragons slammed the door with a 10-0 run to build a 15-4 lead. Lensing had two kills during that run, while Egeland and Gruber had kills and Baer a service ace.
The Dragons ended the 25-11 win with back-to-back kills from Egeland and freshman
Abby Wolpern.
MSUM never trailed in the second set. The Dragons held a 6-4 lead before scoring five straight points -- with sophomore
Annie Palmquist recording a kill and a block assist -- to extend the advantage to 11-4. The Marauders scored three straight to cut the lead to 11-7, but the Dragons responded with a 7-2 spurt to stretch the lead to 18-9. Freshman
Kaitlin VanWinkle and Lensing had kills for the Dragons during that run, which helped them record a 25-12 win.
The third set was more of the same. MSUM opened the set on a 14-3 run and never looked back in a 25-12 win. That opening stretch was sparked by big serving runs from VanWinkle and Baer, along with two kills each from Gruber and Egeland. The Dragons rolled from there to a 13-point win.
Wolpern and Palmquist each added five kills for MSUM. Baer added seven digs while freshman
Amber Krenske added six.
MSUM returns home Saturday to face Minot State. The match begins at 4 p.m. at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
