Dragon Men Make Regular-Season Home Debut Friday vs. UMM

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team (2-0) makes its 2012-13 regular-season home debut on Friday against Minnesota-Morris. The game, part of a women's/men's doubleheader, begins at 8 p.m. Friday night at Alex Nemzek Hall in Moorhead, Minn.

The Dragons got off to a good start to their 2012-13 season with wins over Lincoln (72-67) and Southwest Baptist (92-69) at the Southwest Baptist Classic in Bolivar, Mo., last weekend.

MSUM holds a 51-34 edge in the all-time series against Minnesota-Morris. The Dragons won the last meeting between the two teams, 98-67 on Dec. 11, 2003.

About MSUM
The Dragons went 2-0 at the Southwest Baptist Classic to open the regular season. MSUM beat Lincoln, 72-67, thanks to 23 points and seven rebounds from senior Anthony Tucker and a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds from senior Alex Novak. The next day, the Dragons hit 17-of-27 three-pointers on their way to a 23-point win over SBU. Tucker just missed a triple-double with 24 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, while freshman Tyler Vaughan added 15 points.

Tucker leads the Dragons at 23.5 points per game through two games, while Novak is at 12.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Senior Eric Olson and sophomore Jordan Riewer average 10.5 points and 10.0 points per game, respectively. The Dragons shoot 51.9 percent from the field as a team including 51.1 percent from three-point range. They are averaging 82 points per game while allowing 68.

Chad Walthall is his third season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 38-22 at the school.

About Minnesota-Morris
Minnesota-Morris is 0-0 on the season; the Cougars lost a 70-63 exhibition game at Augustana on Nov. 5.   Steve Birman led UMM with 15 points in that game, while RJ Dean added 14.

UMM will face Concordia-Moorhead on Thursday night prior to facing the Dragons.

The Cougars finished 11-15 a year ago, including 7-7 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.  Brendon Foss, an All-UMAC selection a year ago, returns after averaging 10.5 points per game, while Logan Orazem averaged 7.0 points per game.

Paul Grove is in his 10th season as UMM's head coach with a record of 115-124 at the school. His overall coaching record is 221-188 in 15 seasons as a head coach.

Climbing the Charts
Senior Alex Novak is at 842 career points, just 158 away from 1,000, and is also at 783 rebounds, which is third all-time and just 234 away from the all-time school record.  Novak is also the school's all-time record holder with 174 blocks.

Preseason Poll
The Dragons were picked to win the NSIC North Division in the preseason coaches poll and were picked to finish fifth overall in the league.
