MSUM Volleyball Wraps Up Final Homestand with UMC and Bemidji State

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team wraps up its 2012 season with home matches this weekend against Minnesota-Crookston on Friday (7 p.m. first serve) and Bemidji State on Saturday (4 p.m. first serve).

The Dragons (15-12, 7-11 NSIC) have won three straight matches, including sweeps of Mary and Minot State last week. They beat Minnesota-Crookston in four sets and swept Bemidji State earlier.

Sophomore Annie Palmquist paces a balanced MSUM hitting attack with 302 kills, averaging 2.90 per set. Senior Heidi Lensing has 288 kills, while sophomore Maggie Gruber has 240 and freshman Kaitlin VanWinkle has 218. Senior setter Anna Olson has 715 assists, while freshman Casie Baer has 340. Senior Katy Ness leads with 21 service aces and 659 digs. VanWinkle has an impressive 115 total blocks, averring 1.12 per set.

As a team, MSUM is hitting .218, compared to .181 for its opponents.

Tammy Blake, the dean of NSIC volleyball coaches, is in her 18th year at MSUM. She is 315-239 at the school.

The Opponents
About Minnesota-Crookston

Minnesota-Crookston is 11-14 overall and 7-11 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles have lost two straight, including being swept by Minnesota-Duluth and St. Cloud State last weekend.
Brittany Looker leads with 230 kills, while Amanda Swann has 226.  UMC is hitting .166 as a team for the season.
Paige Mitchell has 406 set assists for the Golden Eagles while Lindsey Rees has 346. Chelsea Wiesner has 416 digs, averaging 4.89 per set.
Lee Anderson is in his sixth season as the head coach at UMC with a record of 39-131 at the school.

About Bemidji State
Bemidji State is 4-21 overall and 2-16 in the NSIC. The Beavers have lost three straight matches, including being swept by UMD and St. Cloud State last weekend.
Bethany Thompson leads the Bemidji hitting attack with 332 kills, averaging 4.05 per set. Courtney Volkmann has 744 set assists and also leads with 32 service aces. Elissa Christensen leads with 235 digs while Rachel Craig has 47 blocks.
As a team, Bemidji State hits. 155, while Beaver opponents are hitting .261.
Wayne Chadwick is in his third season as Bemidji State's head coach with a record of 10-42 at the school.

National Rankings
--Ness ranks 5th in the nationally in Division II in digs per set at 6.34.
--VanWinkle ranks 38th in blocks per set at 1.12.
--As a team, the Dragons rank 15th in the nation in set assists per set (13.14), 18th in kills per set (13.9), 19th in digs per set (17.82) and 26th in blocks per set (2.26).

Climbing the Charts
--Ness has moved into second all-time in career digs at MSUM with 2,129 and trails record-holder Calla Oftedahl by 202 with two matches remaining.
--Lensing is at 1,265 kills and is now fifth all-time in school history. She is just 13 kills away from fourth.
--Olson is at 2,124 set assists, ranking her eighth all-time and just 109 from seventh.

NSIC Players of the Week
Ness became the first MSUM player to earn NSIC Player of the Week honors this season, and has earned the Defensive Player of the Week honors seven times (Sept. 4, 10, 24, Oct. 1, Oct. 15, Oct. 22 and Oct. 29), most of any player. She leads the NSIC at 6.34 digs per set and is ranked seventh in the nation in that category.

NSIC preseason poll
The Dragons were picked to finish seventh in the NSIC preseason coaches poll. The Dragons received 146 votes in the poll, just five away from sixth-place Augustana. Defending national champion Concordia led the poll with 225 points and 15 first-place votes.
