MSUM Men Open Key Homestand This Week Against UMD and St. Cloud State

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- After playing three straight conference games on the road, the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team returns home this week to begin a five-game homestand, starting on Friday against Minnesota-Duluth (8 p.m. tipoff). The Dragons will then play host to league-leading St. Cloud State on Saturday at 6 p.m.

MSUM (7-1, 2-1 NSIC) is coming off of a road sweep at Minot State (84-53 win) and Mary (82-70) last weekend.  Minnesota-Duluth (3-4, 1-2 NSIC) is coming off of a split at home, beating Minnesota-Crookston 66-61 before losing to Bemidji State, 66-55. St. Cloud State is 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the NSIC after sweeping Bemidji State (68-60) and Minnesota-Crookston (79-55) at home.

MSUM will meet Minnesota-Duluth for a 113th time, with the Bulldogs holding a 76-36 edge in the series.  The Dragons swept the series a year ago, winning 85-67 in Moorhead and 85-73 in Duluth. St. Cloud State and MSUM will square off for a 120th time with the Huskies holding an 82-38 edge in the series.  St. Cloud State won the 2011-12 meeting, 77-56 in St. Cloud.

About MSUM
The Dragons recorded two solid wins on the road last weekend to improve to 7-1 overall. MSUM dominated Minot State, 84-53, thanks to 16 points each from Taylor Filipek and Jordan Riewer,  and beat Mary, 82-70, thanks to 22 points and 14 rebounds from Alex Novak.

Senior guard Anthony Tucker leads the Dragons at 19.6 points per game. He is also averaging 6.8 rebounds and 4.9 assists per contest and is shooting 51 percent from the field. Novak averages 14.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, while Riewer is at 12.0 points per contest. The Dragons average 79.1 points per game as a team and are shooting 49.6 percent from the field. On defense they allow 63.6 points per game and have a 38.5-31.1 edge in rebounding average.

Chad Walthall is in his third season at MSUM with a record of 43-23 at the school.

About Minnesota-Duluth
Minnesota-Duluth is 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the NSIC. The Bulldogs beat Minnesota-Crookston, 66-61 on Dec. 7 before losing to Bemidji State a day later, 66-55.

Jake Hottenstine leads UMD at 15 points per game followed by Brett Ervin at 10.7 points per game. Jordan Reetz leads at 4.6 rebounds and 13 assists. As a team UMD averages 64.6 points per game but allows 71.9. The Bulldogs are shooting just 38.8 percent from the field, including 31 percent from three-point range.

Matt Bowen, who was the 2011-12 NSIC Coach of the Year with Bemidji State, is in his first season as UMD's head coach with a record of 3-4 at the school.

About St. Cloud State
St. Cloud State is 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the NSIC. The Huskies beat Bemidji State, 68-60 and Minnesota-Crookston, 79-55 last weekend at home. They will face Northern State prior to facing MSUM.

Theo Rothstein leads the Huskies at 20.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, while senior guard Shaun Jensen averages 11.0 points and 6.3 assists per game. Damarius Cruz averages 10.3 points per contest for SCSU, which averages 78.8 points per game as a team and shoots 48.7 percent from the field. The Huskies allow 62 points per game.

Kevin Schlagel is in his 16th season as St. Cloud State's head coach with a record of 307-141 at the school.

Climbing the Charts
Senior Alex Novak is at 932 career points, just 68 away from 1,000, and is also at 839 rebounds, which is third all-time and just 178 away from the all-time school record.  Novak is also the school's all-time record holder with 184 blocks.
Tucker is at 847 career points and is just 153 from 1,000 for his collegiate career.

Preseason Poll
The Dragons were picked to win the NSIC North Division in the preseason coaches poll and were picked to finish fifth overall in the league.
