MSUM Women Return Home for Crucial NSIC Games Against Bulldogs and Huskies

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team faces a pair of key Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foes this week at home, starting with Minnesota-Duluth on Friday at 6 p.m., and concluding the weekend against St. Cloud State on Saturday at 4 p.m.

While it's early in the 22-game conference season, MSUM is at 2-1 in the league -- the same NSIC mark as Minnesota-Duluth, and a game behind St. Cloud State, which shares the overall lead with Augustana and Minnesota State at 3-0.

MSUM (5-2, 2-1 NSIC) split two games on the road last weekend, while UMD (5-2, 2-1 NSIC) and St. Cloud State (6-0, 3-0 NSIC) both swept Minnesota-Crookston and Bemidji State at home.

The Dragons will meet UMD for a 74th time, with the Bulldogs holding a 47-26 lead in the series. MSUM won both meetings in 2011-12, however, winning 63-61 in Moorhead and 84-77 in Duluth.  MSUM and St. Cloud State will meet for a 47th time with the Huskies holding a 28-18 edge. The Dragons won the 2011-12 meeting, 82-71 in St. Cloud.

About MSUM
The Dragons (5-2, 2-1 NSIC) split two games on the road last weekend, falling at Minot State, 73-57, despite 15 points from Marisa Yernatich, but rebounded with a thrilling 63-60 buzzer-beating win at Mary, with junior Morgan Zabel hitting a three as time expired.

Junior Megan Strese leads MSUM at 16.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, while Yernatich is at 14.9 points per game and Zabel at 12.7. Junior Haley Thomforde leads at 3.2 assists per game. The Dragons score 68.6 points per game and shoot 40 percent from the field; they outrebound their opponent 41.7-34.9 and allow 61.4 points per game.

Karla Nelson is in her 13th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 213-139.

About Minnesota-Duluth
Minnesota-Duluth is 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the NSIC after sweeping Minnesota-Crookston (75-53) and Bemidji State (65-50) at home last weekend.

Katrina Newman leads UMD at 16.3 points per game and also pulls down 7.9 rebounds per contest, while Hannah Rutten averages 14.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Kaiya Sygulla averages 3.0 assists per game as well. As a team, the Bulldogs score 69.6 points per game and shoot 39.7 percent from the field. They outrebound their opponents 42.3-30.9 and allow 63.6 points per game.

Annette Wiles is in her fifth season as UMD's head coach with a record of 74-47 at the school.

About St. Cloud State
St. Cloud State moved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the NSIC with wins over Bemidji State (81-53) and Minnesota-Crookston (64-54) last weekend at home.

Sam Price leads SCSU at 17.1 points per game, while Jessica Benson averages 16.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.  Nicole Anderson leads SCSU at 4.4 assists per game. The Huskies average 75.3 points per game offensively and shoot 43.3 percent from the field; they allow just 53.1 points per game on defense and outrebound their opponents 37.0-33.3.

Lori Fish is in her fifth season as St. Cloud State's head coach with a record of 63-53 at the school.

Preseason Poll
MSUM was picked to finish 11th in the NSIC in a polling of the league's coaches. The Dragons were picked to finish fourth in the NSIC's North Division.

Yernatich Sets Three-Point Mark
Senior Marisa Yernatich has set the standard for three-point shooting during her career for MSUM, and has the record to prove it. Yernatich now has 153 three-pointers for her career and holds the all-time record.
