MSUM Men Continue NSIC Road Swing at Minot State and Mary

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team continues action on the road this week with a pair of conference games at Minot State (8 p.m. Friday) and Mary (6 p.m. Saturday in Bismarck, N.D.).

The Dragons (5-1, 0-1 NSIC) saw a five-game winning streak end Saturday with a 69-66 loss at Northern State.  Minot State (1-3, 0-1 NSIC) lost to Mary, 77-65 on Dec. 1, while Mary improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the league with the win.

MSUM holds a 17-9 edge in the all-time series with Minot State; the Dragons topped the Beavers 68-60 on Dec. 7, 2011 in the last meeting. Mary leads the series with MSUM 11-8; the two teams split a year ago, with the Marauders winning in Bismarck, 72-51 and the Dragons winning in Moorhead, 67-66.

About MSUM
The Dragons suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday, a 69-66 decision at Northern State on Dec. 1. Senior Anthony Tucker paced the Dragons with 16 points, while sophomore Jordan Riewer had 13 points and four assists.  

Tucker leads the Dragons at 22.5 points per game. He is also averaging 7.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per contest and is shooting 57.1 percent from the field. Senior forward Alex Novak averages 13.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, while Riewer is at 10.2 points per contest. The Dragons average 77.8 points per game as a team and are shooting 51.2 percent from the field. On defense they allow 64.3 points per game but have a 38.2-30.7 edge on the glass.

Chad Walthall is in his third season at MSUM with a record of 41-23 at the school.

About Minot State
Minot State is 1-3 on the year; the Beavers' lone win is an 86-27 win over Northland College. Minot State lost at Mary, 77-65 on Friday despite getting 15 points from Chris East.

The Beavers do not have a player averaging in double figures; East and Josh Johnson led the team at 9.8 points per game. Minot State averages 72 points per game as a team and shoots 41.5 percent from the field. On defense the Beavers allow 66.5 points per game but outrebound their opponents 40.5-35.3.

Matt Murken is in his first season as Mary's head coach with a record of 1-3 at the school.

About Mary
Mary is 2-3 on the year and will face Northern State on Friday prior to facing the Dragons. The Marauders earned a 77-65 win over Minot State on Saturday to end a two-game losing streak.  Five Mary players scored in double figures, led by Alex Dorr with 23 points.

Dorr leads Mary at 16.2 points per game, while Josh Turner averages 15.6 and Jalen Jaspers 10.2. As a team Mary scores 68.2 points per game and shoots 45.3 percent from the field. The Marauders allow 70.2 points per game but out rebound their opponents 36.6-28.8.

Jevin Budde is in his second season as Mary's head coach with a record of 10-21 at the school.

Climbing the Charts
Senior Alex Novak is at 898 career points, just 102 away from 1,000, and is also at 813 rebounds, which is third all-time.  Novak is also the school's all-time record holder with 180 blocks.

Preseason Poll
The Dragons were picked to win the NSIC North Division in the preseason coaches poll and were picked to finish fifth overall in the league.
