MSUM Women Hit the Road for NSIC Games at Minot State and Mary

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team continues action on the road this week with a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games. On Friday the Dragons will play at Minot State for a 6 p.m., Central time contest, and will conclude the weekend on Saturday with a game at Mary which tips off at 4 p.m. in Bismarck, N.D.

MSUM (4-1, 1-0 NSIC) earned a 66-54 road win at Northern State to open NSIC play on Saturday. Minot State (3-0, 1-0 NSIC edged Mary, 74-73 to open league play on Dec. 1. Mary is 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC after losing to Minot State on Saturday.

In the all-time series between the two schools, MSUM holds a 13-2 edge over Minot State, including a 71-55 win a year ago.  The Dragons also lead the all-time series with Mary, 20-9, as the two teams split two meetings a year ago; the Marauders won in Bismarck, 63-54 while the Dragons prevailed in Moorhead 98-82.

About MSUM?
The Dragons split two games in Hawaii at the Oahu Classic last week, losing to Hawaii-Hilo, 67-66, despite 19 points and 11 rebounds from junior Megan Strese, before beating BYU-Hawaii, 68-52, with junior Morgan Zabel leading with 19 points.

Senior Marisa Yernatich leads the Dragons at 18.5 points per game, while Strese is at 14.3 points per game and Zabel at 13.8. Strese leads with 9.3 rebounds per game, while senior Kaycee Charette leads with 12 assists. Zabel and Yernatich share the team lead with seven steals.

As a team, MSUM scores 73.5 points per game and allows 60.8. The Dragons shoot 42.9 percent from the field and out rebound their opponents by an average of 41.0-31.5.

Karla Nelson is in her 13th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 212-138.

About Minot State?
Minot State is 3-0 on the year and 1-0 in the NSIC. The Beavers edged Mary, 74-73, rallying from an 11-point halftime deficit to earn the win. Reigning NSIC Player of the Week Carly Boag had 31 points for Minot State in the win.

The Beavers also own wins over Jamestown and Concordia-Moorhead on the season. Boag leads Minot State at 19.7 points per game while Sacarra Molina averages 16.7 points per contest. As a team Minot State averages 72 points per game and shoots 46 percent from the field. The Beavers allow 66.3 points per game and teams are shooting 37 percent from the field against them.

Sheila Green Gerding is in her 18th season as Minot State's head coach with a record of 305-198 at the school.

About Mary
?Mary is 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC. The Marauders lost to Minot State, 74-73 on Dec. 1.  Four players scored in double figures for Mary, led by Ali Collins and Kaitlyn Haag with 15 points each.

Shaunna Knife leads Mary at 14.5 points per game, while Collins averages 12.0. The Marauders average 70.7 points per game and shoot 39.3 percent from the field. On defense they allow 61.7 points per game but outrebound their opponents 46.2-34.5.

Rick Neumann is in his first season as Mary's head coach with a record of 4-2 at the school. Neumann was named to replace Fred Fridley in October.

Preseason Poll?
MSUM was picked to finish 11th in the NSIC in a polling of the league's coaches. The Dragons were picked to finish fourth in the NSIC's North Division.

Climbing the Charts?
Yernatich is at 148 three-pointers, just three behind the all-time record held by Kris Wilson of 151.
