MINOT, N.D. -- Five players scored in double figures as the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team rolled to an 84-53 win over Minot State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday night in Minot, N.D.
MSUM improved to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC with the win, while Minot State fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Junior
Taylor Filipek and sophomore
Jordan Riewer had 16 points each to pace the Dragons, while senior
Anthony Tucker had 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Senior
Alex Novak had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. while freshman
Tyler Vaughan had 11 points and two steals.
The Dragons shot 42 percent (28-of-67) but had a commanding 46-35 edge in rebounds. MSUM also hit 13-of-34 three-pointers, compared to 2-of-14 for Minot State.
Filipek got the Dragons off to a good start, draining a 3-pointer 37 seconds into the contest to give the Dragons the early lead. Minot State was within 8-5 but a 12-0 run helped MSUM push the lead to 20-5. Riewer and Filipek each drained threes for MSUM while Novak slammed home a dunk.
The Beavers closed the gap to 28-14, but MSUM scored eight straight points -- five coming from Filipek -- to take a commanding 36-14 lead with 4:47 left in the half. The Dragons took a 46-23 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Dragons continued to add to their lead. Vaughan drained a three-pointer to make it 61-31 MSUM with 11:07 left. The Dragon lead grew to as much as 84-51 when freshman Damian Reinke hit a three in the final minute.
Senior
Eric Olson had six rebounds off the bench for MSUM, while freshman
Brady Wohler had six points.
The Dragons play at Mary at 6 p.m. on Saturday to wrap up the weekend.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: With the win tonight over Minot State, the Dragons matched (to the date) what they did five seasons ago (2007). The Dragons dropped their first league game on Dec. 1 at Concordia-St. Paul (the Dragons lost to Northern State last Saturday, December 1), then came back six nights later on Dec. 7 to beat Bemidji State, leveling their record to 1-1.
