BISMARCK, N.D. -- Senior
Alex Novak had a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds to help the Minnesota State Moorhead men's basketball team earn an 82-70 win over Mary in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday night in Bismarck, N.D.
The 12-point win gave the Dragons (7-1, 2-1 NSIC) a weekend sweep on the road, while Mary fell to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Junior
Taylor Filipek added a career-high 19 points for MSUM, while sophomore
Jordan Riewer also added 19 points and five assists for MSUM. Senior
Eric Olson chipped in nine points, while senior
Anthony Tucker also had five assists.
The Dragons shot 30-of-61 (49.2 percent) from the field for the game.
MSUM set the tone early with a 14-5 run over the first four minutes, thanks to five points from Filipek and four from Novak. Riewer added a three to begin the offense for the Dragons.
Mary cut the gap to 20-15, but 10 straight points helped the Dragons stretch the lead to 30-15 with 5:46 left in the half. That run was sparked by threes from Riewer and Filipek.
The Dragons took a 39-26 lead into halftime.
Mary cut the gap to 53-48 with 12:53 left in the game, but a three by Riewer quickly pushed the Dragon lead to 56-48 with 12:31 left.
A Tucker three-pointer gave the Dragons a 64-52 lead with 10:18 left, and a three-point play by Olson with 4:51 left made it 74-59 MSUM. From there, the Dragons' lead never dropped below eight points.
Freshman
Brady Wohler had four points and four assists for MSUM. Filipek collected five rebounds.
The Dragons are back home on Friday to face Minnesota-Duluth for an 8 p.m. tipoff at Alex Nemzek Hall.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: The Dragons had gone 195 conference games in between 30 plus point victories before last night's 84-53 win over Minot State. The previous occasion was a 90-54 home win versus Concordia University (St. Paul) on January 11, 2002.
