MOORHEAD, Minn. -- For the first time in program history, the Minnesota State University Moorhead has earned a dual meet win over Minnesota State, Mankato, recording a 152-146 win over the Mavericks in action Saturday at Alex Nemzek Pool in Moorhead, Minn. The Dragons earned a 2-0 record in the double dual, beating Northern State, 232-58.
MSUM is now an impressive 5-0 in duals this season.
“I told the team before the meet that if we were 100 percent we could beat Mankato, but since we had so many people sick this week, we just didn't have enough to beat them today. I said let's just go out and keep it as close as we can," MSUM head coach
Todd Peters said. "The team responded by saying 'no, they were going to win this meet.' Freshman
Jackie Woods was especially vocal about winning and she backed it up by winning three events including coming from behind in the 200 IM. The team exploded when she hit the wall 0.07 second ahead of her Mankato opponent. That pretty much secured the win.”
Several athletes helped the Dragons to the two dual wins. Junior
Kelsey Jandro's 1-meter diving score qualified her for the nationals. She needed a score of 390 to qualify and attained a 390.85 to surpass the qualifying mark.
Junior
Jenna Thompson set a new pool record in winning the 50 freestyle. She swam a time of 24.27 to edge teammate
Megan Rieland (25.27) for the win. Thompson also broke the school record for 50 freestyle relay split with a time of 23.76.
Freshman
Jackie Woods continued her outstanding collegiate debut season for the Dragons. She won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.23), the 200 breaststroke (2:29.44) and earned the come-from-behind win in the 200 IM at 2:14.99 to help the Dragons clinch the win in the meet.
Junior
Shayna Dugger added a valuable win in the 3-meter diving, earning a score of 396.65 to top teammate Jandro (379.80) for the win.
MSUM's 200 medley relay was second at 1:50.55. That consisted of freshman
Rachel Erickson, Woods, Rieland and Thompson.
Junior
Laura Goll was second in the 1,650 freestyle at 19:31.48, while Erickson was second in the 100 backstroke (1:02.65). Freshman
