MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team look to finish the 2011-12 season on a high note Wednesday night against the Vikings of Augustana and Friday night against the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State. The Dragons will be honoring this season's seniors and 2006 165-pound National Champion Nate Baker on Senior Night against the Mustangs in Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
No. 1 125 pound wrestler
Corey Ulmer looks to ride his current success through the end of the season and into the NCAA postseason. The Ashley, N.D. native holds a record of 20-2 after defending his top-dog status last Friday against Northern State. Prior to the 9-3 decision over Anthony Bruno of NSU, Ulmer took down the previous No. 1 wreslter in the nation, Kyle Pedretti of Upper Iowa, in a 5-4 decision.
Sophomore
Connor MacGregor looks to improve his two-match winning streak, and his 5-15 record, by starting in the 141 class. MacGregor was able to grab a victory over UIU's Blake Hilmer in the fashion of a 14-5 major decision. The Roseau, Minn. native followed up the big win with a 9-3 decision over Tyler Frost of NSU.
Also riding wins into Wednesday's dual are
Eric Lehmann and
Tyler Steinwand. Lehmann fell behind early in his match against the Wolves' Baker Haar but was able to comeback to take the 197 class in a 7-4 decision. Steinwand would not need a comback in his victory over Gavin Larsen of NSU. He scored the majority of his points in the first period and would ultimatley take the match in a 10-7 decision.
Assistant wrestling coach Nate Baker, a former transfer from the University of Minnesota, will be honored on Friday night for his 2006 National Championship with the Dragons. Baker was crowned a national champion at 165 pounds and earned All-American honors for a second straight year with a third place finish as a senior in 2007.
Matches for the Wednesday, Feb. 15 dual against the Vikings begin at 7 p.m. Senior Night on Friday, Feb. 17 will begin at 7 p.m. with an intermission where Baker will be honored. Both duals will be held in Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.
