Warriors End Dragons’ Seven-Game Winning Streak

Box Score WINONA, Minn. – The last time the Dragons lost was over one month ago to Winona State, and the Warriors were able to win again 79-47 this Friday night in the McCown Gymnasium. This loss drops the Dragons to 13-11 overall, 10-10 in the NSIC, while the Warriors improve to 16-9 overall, 11-8 in the NSIC.
 
As both teams traded baskets for the first three minutes, the Dragons were then able to put together a 9-2 run, capped by a Marissa Yernatich three-point basket to give the Dragons a 17-10 lead.
 
Angie Jetvig appeared to keep the Dragons momentum rolling as she hit a 17-foot jump shot as the shot clock was expiring for a 19-14 lead, and later Morgan Zabel came off a screen to take a Yernatich pass for a left-handed layup to tie the game 21-21. However the Warriors went on a 15-6 run, with Abbey Busch hitting an open layup at the end of the half to give the Warriors the lead at 36-27.
 
The Dragons attempted to start the second half strong, as Zabel hit a three pointer off a Brittany Mayclin assist to cut the WSU lead 40-30. Megan Strese was able to power up a layup against WSU center Michelle Tobin, with whom she battled all game, and followed on the ensuing possession with a layup off a Jetvig feed for a 46-34 WSU lead. However it was all Warriors to finish the game, as they opened up a 32-point lead by the final buzzer.
 
The Dragons were plagued by 16 turnovers, as the Warriors were able to score 21 points off those turnovers.
 
Offensive rebounds came at a premium during tonight's competition, as there were 68 total rebounds (29 for MSUM, 39 for WSU) with only 13 total rebounds on offense.
 
MSUM finished the game 18-for-54, 33.3%, from the field, 3-for-13, 23.1%, from three, and 8-for-12, 66.7%, from the free throw line. The Dragons were led in scoring by Zabel (11), Jetvig (8), and Strese (8).
 
WSU shot 25-for-53, 47.2%, from the field, 6-for-19, 31.6%, from three, and 23-for-28, 82.1%, from the free throw line. The Warriors were led in scoring my Michelle McDonald (21), Abby Busch (19), and Beth Alberson (12).
 
Tomorrow night the Dragons travel to the Dorman Gymnasium at Upper Iowa University for a 6:00 pm start.
 
Steve d'Eustachio's Stat of the Game: The 47 points scored by the Dragons tonight was their lowest offensive output since their 60-46 loss to Northern State on January 9, 2011.
