ST. PAUL, Minn. – Sophomore Annie Palmquist had a team-high 11 kills, but it wasn't enough as the No. 19-ranked Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team fell to No. 2-ranked Concordia-St. Paul, 25-15, 25-9, 25-13, in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday night in St. Paul. MSUM fell to 9-4 overall and 1-3 in the NSIC, while Concordia improved to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the league.
The high-powered Concordia offensive attack was strong all night, as the Golden Bears finished with 54 kills and just five errors, hitting .516. MSUM hit .119 with 28 kills.
Palmquist hit .231 in the match for the Dragons. Senior Heidi Lensing added eight kills while freshman Kaitlin VanWinkle added five. Senior Anna Olson and freshman Casie Baer each had 11 set assists, while senior Katy Ness had 11 digs.

MSUM faced a 10-5 deficit in the first set but a kill by Lensing brought the Dragons within 14-11.  However, the Golden Bears scored four straight to stretch the lead to 18-11, and the Dragons never got closer than six the rest of the way in falling, 25-15.

In the second set, MSUM was within 5-3 after a kill from Palmquist, but Concordia scored four straight points to stretch the lead to 9-3.  From there, the Golden Bear hitting attack kicked into full gear and rolled to a 25-9 win.

The Dragons took an early 3-2 lead in the third set thanks to back-to-back kills from Palmquist. They were within 9-8 after a Lensing kill but CSP pulled away from there and took a 25-13 win.

MSUM faces another ranked team on Saturday when it plays at No. 13-ranked Minnesota State, Mankato. The match begins at 4 p.m. in Mankato.

Note: The Dragons have played 13 matches so far in 2012 – all away from home – with six coming against teams ranked in the AVCA Division II Top 25.
