Dragon Women to Entertain Sioux Falls and SMSU

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team continues play at home this week when it hosts the University of Sioux Falls on Friday (6 p.m. tipoff) and Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday (4 p.m. tipoff). The two games will wrap up a three-game homestand for MSUM.

The Dragons (7-7, 4-6 NSIC) will look to end a three-game losing streak with this weekend's games. USF is 8-6 overall and 5-5 in the NSIC after losing to SMSU, 66-52 on Tuesday. SMSU is 2-13 overall and 1-9 in the league after the win.

USF and MSUM will meet for a first time ever in women's basketball. The Dragons and SMSU will meet for a 76th time, with the Mustangs holding a 42-33 series advantage. SMSU won the last meeting, 64-57, on Jan. 3, 2012 in Moorhead.

About MSUM
The Dragons (7-7, 4-6) led at halftime against Northern State but the Wolves outscored them 46-30 in the second half in a 68-55 win. MSUM was led by Megan Strese's 19 points.

Strese leads the Dragons at 15.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, while senior Marisa Yernatich is at 13.2 points of game. Junior Morgan Zabel is averaging 12.4 points per game for MSUM, which is averaging 65.1 points per game as a team. Junior Haley Thomforde leads with 48 assists, while Zabel leads with 22 steals. MSUM allows 65.1 points per game on defense.

Karla Nelson is in her 13th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 215-144.

About Sioux Falls
Sioux Falls is 8-6 overall and 5-5 in the NSIC. The Cougars saw a two-game winning streak end with a 66-52 loss to SMSU on Tuesday. Chrissy Strassburg led USF with 10 points.

Junior Laura Johnson leads the Cougars at 14.1 points per game; she is the only player on the team averaging double figures. Jaicee Ulmer is next at 9.0 points per game. Johnson also leads at 7.9 rebounds per game and holds the team lead with 40 assists and 14 blocks. USF averages 63.8 points per game and allows 62.9. The Cougars shoot 38.4 percent from the field.

Travis Traphagen is in his fifth season as USF's head coach with a record of 94-43 at the school.

About SMSU
SMSU ended a 10-game losing streak with the win at Sioux Falls. Bree Holleman and Alison Nagel led the way with 15 points each.

Holleman and Nagel lead the Mustangs at 10.8 and 10.3 points per game, respectively. Nagel leads at 5.3 rebounds per game along with 16 blocks. Freshman Mikayla Saathoff leads with 41 assists. SMSU is averaging 56.1 points per game but allowing 74.3. The Mustangs shoot 38.6 percent from the field.

Allison Kruger is in her third season as SMSU's head coach with a record of 15-52 at the school.

Preseason Poll
MSUM was picked to finish 11th in the NSIC in a polling of the league's coaches. The Dragons were picked to finish fourth in the NSIC's North Division.

Yernatich Adds to Three-Point Record
Senior Marisa Yernatich has set the standard for three-point shooting during her career for MSUM, and has the record to prove it. Yernatich now has 173 three-pointers for her career and holds the all-time record.  She tied the single-game school record she had set previously with seven 3-pointers in the 71-65 win over Minnesota-Crookston on Jan. 4.
