Dragon Women Seek to Continue Winning Ways at Upper Iowa and Winona State

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team, which has won four straight games, goes on the road for the second straight weekend with games at Upper Iowa (6 p.m. on Friday) and Winona State (4 p.m. on Saturday).

The Dragons (11-7, 8-6 NSIC) beat Bemidji State (75-66) and Minnesota-Crookston (67-64) to cap off an unbeaten weekend on the road last weekend.  Upper Iowa (7-14, 4-10 NSIC) saw a three-game winning streak end with a 66-63 loss to Sioux Falls on Saturday while Winona State (14-7, 8-6 NSIC lost a pair of games on the road last weekend, including a 66-64 loss at Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday.

MSUM has never lost to Upper Iowa, holding a 13-0 all-time lead in the series. The Dragons will face Winona State for a 70th time and hold a 42-27 all-time series lead.

About MSUM
MSUM pushed its season-best winning streak to four games with wins at Bemidji State and Minnesota-Crookston. In the win over Bemidji State, junior Megan Strese had 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead MSUM, while senior Marisa Yernatich's 15 points led the Dragons in the win over UMC.

Strese leads the Dragons at 14.9 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Yernatich is at 12.6 points per game while junior Morgan Zabel averages 12.4 points per game off the bench.  Junior Haley Thomforde leads with 57 assists, while senior Kaycee Charette leads with 30 steals.  MSUM shoots 38.6 percent from the field and averages 66.6 points per game. The Dragons outrebound their opponents 40.9-35.7 and allow 64.9 points per game.

Karla Nelson is in her 13th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 219-144.

About Upper Iowa
Upper Iowa is 7-14 overall and 4-10 in the NSIC. The Peacocks beat SMSU, 71-58 before losing at Sioux Falls, 66-63 in road games last weekend.

Whitney Kieffer leads Upper Iowa at 19.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. She also leads the team with 65 steals. Carly Pagel averages 11.8 points per game as well. Sam Thrapp leads with 88 assists. As a team, Upper Iowa shoots 39.4 percent from the field and scores 66.5 points per game. The Peacocks outrebound their opponents, 37.2-36.4 but allow 71.2 points per game on defense.

Carol Russell is in her third season as Upper Iowa's head coach with a record of 11-62 at the school.

About Winona State
The Warriors are 14-6 overall and 8-6 in the NSIC. They lost back-to-back games on the road last weekend, falling to Sioux Falls (53-49) and SMSU (66-64).

Becca Friestleben leads Winona at 17.4 points per game, while Katie Wolff averages 11.5. Michelle Tobin averages 10.0 points per game and leads with 8.6 rebounds. As a team, the Warriors shoot 42 percent from the field and score 67.4 points per game. They outrebound their opponents 36.1-33.7 and allow just 52.6 points per game.

Scott Ballard is in his ninth season as Winona State's head coach with a record of 143-108 at the school.

Preseason Poll
MSUM was picked to finish 11th in the NSIC in a polling of the league's coaches. The Dragons were picked to finish fourth in the NSIC's North Division.

Yernatich Adds to Three-Point Record
Senior Marisa Yernatich has set the standard for three-point shooting during her career for MSUM, and has the record to prove it. Yernatich now has 178 three-pointers for her career and holds the all-time record.  She tied the single-game school record she had set previously with seven 3-pointers in the 71-65 win over Minnesota-Crookston on Jan. 4.
