Dragon Women Return Home to Face Valley City State and Northern State

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team is back home this week for a pair of games. The unbeaten Dragons host Valley City State at 7 p.m. on Monday for a nonconference matchup and then open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Saturday against Northern State (4 p.m. tipoff).

MSUM will face Valley City State for a 45th time, with the Dragons holding a 28-16 series advantage, including a 69-66 overtime win on the road a year ago. The Dragons will meet Northern State for a 66th time with the Wolves holding a 42-23 series lead. The two teams split a year ago, with each winning on each other's home courts.

About MSUM
MSUM moved to 3-0 on the season with two wins at the Radisson Hotel Roseville Classic in St. Paul, Minn., last weekend. The Dragons beat Wisconsin-Parkside, 71-68 on Nov. 15 and then followed with a 68-63 win over No. 21-ranked Michigan Tech on Nov. 16. Senior Morgan Zabel led the way for the Dragons, averaging 17.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game at the event. Zabel was named the tournament MVP.

Zabel leads MSUM at 19.0 points per game while sophomore guard Meghan Roehrich, who had 28 points in two games last weekend, averages 12.0. Senior forward Megan Strese is averaging 11.7 points per game for MSUM, which is averaging 73.3 as a team. Zabel also leads MSUM in rebounding (7.3), assists (13) and steals (five).  Roehrich and redshirt freshman Morgan Banasik each lead with five 3-pointers on the season. The Dragon are shooting 44.1 percent as a team, including 39.1 percent from three-point range. They are outrebounding their opposition 41.3-29.3 and are allowing 65.0 points per game.

Karla Nelson is in her 14th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 227-148.

About Valley City State
Valley City State is 3-4 on the season. The Vikings dominated Viterbo, 83-50 on Friday night, paced by a huge night from Brittany Lehner, who had 32 points on 14-of-17 shooting.

Lehner leads Valley City State in scoring at 16.4 points per game and also leads the team in rebounding (6.1 per game). She is shooting a team-best 64.2 percent from the field. Megan Trautman averaged 7.7 points per game, while Sierra Even averages 2.2 assists per game. Valley City State averages 66.0 points per game and shoots 38.9 percent from the field. On defense, the Vikings allow 69.7 points per game. Teams are shooting 43.5 percent against the Vikings.

Cathy Hanek is in her first season as Valley City State's head coach with a record of 3-4 at the school.

About Northern State
The Wolves are 3-0 on the season; they will face Mayville State prior to facing MSUM. Northern State earned a 56-43 win over Central Methodist on Saturday, led by 13 points from Alison Kusler.

Junior Rachel Krogman is averaging a double-double for the Wolves at 12.7 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. Kusler averages 11.7 points per game while freshman Paige Waytashek averages 11.3 points per game. The Wolves are averaging 61.3 points per game and are shooting 37.9 percent from the field, including just 29.5 percent from three-point range. Northern is outrebounding its foes 41.7-33.3 and allowing only 48.3 points per game.

Curt Fredrickson is in his 35th season as Northern State's head coach with a record of 723-271 at the school.
