MOORHEAD, Minn. -- A strong showing by several freshmen paced the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's swimming and diving team in a 230.5-69.5 win over Concordia College in a dual Saturday night at Concordia's Memorial Auditorium Pool. Several MSUM upperclassmen swam in exhibition heats -- and against the clock -- and set numerous pool records on the day.
With Concordia in a transition year as a result of having a young team and a new coach, the Dragons (5-4 duals) placed their freshmen in the scoring heats and they shined, winning 13 events, led by four wins from
Madison Kuznia. The upperclassmen had an outstanding night as well in setting eight new pool records.
Kuznia won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.97, captured the 200 backstroke at 2:18.61, the 100 butterfly at 1:05.83 and was the leadoff leg of the 200 medley relay which won comfortably by seven seconds. That relay included Kuznia and fellow freshmen
Claire Sauerman,
Kelsey Quigley and
Amber Helgoe.
Sauerman won the 100 breaststroke by .26 seconds over teammate
Angelee Hale with a time of 1:14.36. She also won the 200 breaststroke with a winning time of 2:44.16. Freshman
Megan Palazzolo won the 400 IM with a solid time of 5:07.11 and claimed the 200 butterfly at 2:27.53.
Freshman
Kelly Engbring won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 11:27.14. She added a victory in the 100 freestyle at 58.65. MSUM's 200 free relay, consisting of freshmen
Ashley Higgins,
Maris Jahner, Engbring and Helgoe, won with a time of 1:47.32. Twin sisters Danae and
Danica Scheef went 1-2 in the 200 free.
Danae Scheef won with a time of 2:10.91 with Danica taking second at 2:11.10.
Senior divers
Kelsey Jandro and
Shayna Dugger both had excellent performances. The two divers took advantage of the 1-meter board 11-dive format which also scores the first six dives separately to aim for the pool records, and they were successful in breaking both records. In addition, both surpassed the 390-point score needed to qualify them for the DII National pre-qualifying meet. Jandro had a lifetime best score of 428.15 points while Dugger was close behind with 425.60.
