Roehrich and Banasik Power Dragon Women Past Bemidji State, 94-69

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Sophomore guard Meghan Roehrich and redshirt freshman guard Morgan Banasik each scored 20 points to lead Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team to a 94-69 win over Bemidji State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday night in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM improved to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in the NSIC with the win while Bemidji State fell to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in the NSIC.

Banasik finished 6-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, to reach a career-high with 20 points. Roehrich scored in double figures for the seventh straight game with 20 points; she was 6-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, and also was 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. Senior forward Morgan Zabel had a solid game with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while sophomore forward Heather Strese had nine points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Senior guard Haley Thomforde had a solid all-around game with nine points, five assists and a career-high four blocks.

The Dragons, who scored a season-high 94 points, shot 43.5 percent from the field (30-of-69) while Bemidji State shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62). The Dragons had a big edge on the free throw line, going 25-of-31 (80.6 percent) compared to 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) for the Beavers. The Dragons also owned the glass, outrebounding Bemidji State 55-27, including 24-9 on the offensive glass.

MSUM was down 13-12 with 11:45 left but seized control with a 22-3 run over the next 7:44. Roehrich sparked the run with seven points while Zabel had four and Van Wyhe added a three-pointers.  MSUM took a 44-21 lead into halftime.

The Dragons' bench was a big factor in the first half, outscoring Bemidji State's reserves 19-0. The Dragons also had big advantages in points in the paint (18-6) and points off of turnovers (10-3). The Dragons had a huge advantage at the foul line, hitting 17-of-20 attempts (85 percent) in the first half compared to 3-of-6 for the Beavers.

Zabel and Roehrich had had 11 points for MSUM while five other players had four points each. Heather Strese had nine rebounds in the first half alone.  MSU shot 40.6 percent (13-of-32) in the opening 20 minutes while Bemidji State shot just 26.7 percent (8-of-30).

The Dragons' lead grew to 24 points (55-31) with 15:50 left when Banasik drained a three. Moments later, Heather Strese converted a three-point play to make it 61-34 and from there the Dragons rolled to their first NSIC win of the year.

Sophomore Savanna Handevidt had seven points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Dragons.

MSUM wraps up the weekend against Minnesota Crookston on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse. The game follows a pair of Moorhead High School games vs. St. Michael-Albertville (girls game at 2 p.m. and boys game at 4 p.m.).  Fans can attend all four games on the day at Nemzek with the purchase of one ticket to any of the games.

They posted a home win vs. Upper Iowa on Jan. 13, 2012, 60-49, beat Nebraska-Kearney in the NCAA tournament in Mankato 67-54 on Mar. 13, 2009, won at Bemidji a month earlier 90-71, and beat Bemidji St. at home 62-50 on Jan. 13, 2006.
