MSUM Men Use Balanced Attack to Run Past Golden Eagles, 102-77

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Five Minnesota State University Moorhead players, led by junior Prescott Williams's career-high 22 points, scored in double figures as the Dragons topped Minnesota Crookston, 102-77, in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM improved to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the NSIC with the win while the Golden Eagles fell to 4-5 overall and 1-4 in the league. The Dragons are tied with Winona State as the only two unbeatens atop the conference.

The Dragons shot 53.7 percent (36-of-67) from the field, including a blistering 58.6 percent (17-of-29) from three-point range. UMC shot 51.9 percent (28-of-54) including 8-of-18 from three-point range.  MSUM had a commanding 42-24 edge in rebounds, including 16-6  on the offensive glass, which led to a 23-3 advantage in second-chance points.

Williams finished 7-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, in the win for the Dragons. Junior guard Jordan Riewer had 13 points and a game-high seven assists, while senior guard Tarell Clark had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman forward Aaron Lien had 12 points while junior forward Urbane Bingham had 11 points off the bench. Junior guard Malik Wood had five assists.

The Dragons led by eight at halftime and held a 55-47 advantage with 15:18 left before going on a 14-5 run to push the lead to 69-52. Williams led the way with six points while Riewer and Lien each buried threes.

That run sparked the Dragon offense further as MSUM scored 33 points over the final 11:46 to surpass the 100-point mark. MSUM, which led by as many as 30 in the second half, shot a torrid 10-of-14 from three-point range (71.4 percent) over the final 20 minutes.

UMC led 13-8 with 15:33 left in the first half and held a 26-22 lead with 10:21 left in the half before MSUM went on an 11-4 run to take a 33-30 lead. With the game tied at 33-33, MSUM scored 11 of the next 13 points to take a 44-35 lead with 2:30 left in the half. Williams accounted for eight of those points.

Williams had 11 points in the first half while Clark had eight and Bingham seven.  The Dragons shot 51.7 percent in the first half.

MSUM wraps up the pre-Christmas part of its schedule on Saturday, Dec. 21 at Northern State.

Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: The Dragons hit the 100-point mark in an NSIC game tonight for the first time since their 106-98 home win over the University of Minnesota-Morris on Feb. 21, 1996. That was the game where Brett Beeson scored his school record-setting 54 points.
