Dragon Women Start Strong, Down Minnesota Crookston 77-60

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team used a 19-0 first-half run to break the game open on its way to a 77-60 win over Minnesota Crookston in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM improved to 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the NSIC with the win while the Golden Eagles fell to 4-5 overall and 1-4 in the NSIC.

The Dragons were led by sophomore guard Meghan Roehrich, who had 17 points, while senior forward Megan Strese had 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Redshirt freshman guard Morgan Banasik added 10 points. Senior guard Haley Thomforde had nine points, a game-high six assists, two blocks and four rebounds for the Dragons. Senior forward Morgan Zabel added nine points while sophomore forward Savanna Handevidt tied Strese with eight rebounds.

MSUM shot 47.1 percent (24-of-51) for the game while holding the Golden Eagles to 37.5 percent shooting (21-of-56). The Dragons dominated the boards as well with a 42-25 edge in rebounds.

The game was tied 2-2 before MSUM blasted the game open with the crucial 19-0 run over a span of nearly five minutes to surge into a 21-2 lead. Roehrich had six points during that run with two 3-pointers while Handevidt had five points and Banasik four.

MSUM the rest of the first half, although UMC cut the lead to 29-20 at one point. MSUM finished strong and took a 37-23 lead into halftime.

Roehrich and Megan Strese each had 10 first-half points for the Dragons while Haley Thomforde had six. MSUM shot 46.4 percent (13-of-28) compared to 31 percent (9-of-29) for the Golden Eagles. MSUM outrebounded the Golden Eagles 23-14 in the first 20 minutes.

Leading 43-31 in the second half, MSUM went on a 12-4 run to push the lead to 55-35 with 12:12 left. That spurt was sparked by Zabel's six points. From there, MSUM's lead grew to as many as 23 and never dropped below 17 the rest of the way.

Sophomore forward Heather Strese had seven points and four rebounds off the bench for MSUM while Handevidt chipped in with seven points.

The Dragons wrap up the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule on Saturday, Dec. 21 at Northern State.

Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game:  The Dragons are now 29-3 all-time versus Minnesota Crookston. The only losses suffered by the Dragons were in Crookston on Dec. 8, 2001 and Jan. 6, 2004, and in Moorhead on Dec. 10, 2011. The winning streak between the '04 and the '11 losses was 15 and the current winning streak with tonight's win is now four.
