MSUM Women to Host Marauders and Beavers to End Regular Season

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team wraps up the 2012-13 regular season at home this weekend when it hosts Mary at 6 p.m. on Friday and Minot State at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

MSUM (14-10, 11-9 NSIC) is in a three-way tie for second in the NSIC's North Division along with Mary and Northern State. Mary is 16-10 overall and 11-9 in the NSIC, while Minot State is 12-12 overall and 8-12 in the league. The top four teams in each division will host playoff games in the first round of the league tournament, which begins at Feb. 27 and with one win this weekend, MSUM will guarantee itself a home game in the opening round.

The Dragons will meet Minot State for a 17th time; they hold a 13-3 all-time series lead, although the Beavers won the meeting earlier this season, 73-57 in Minot, N.D.  MSUM also holds a 21-9 series lead against Mary, including a 63-60 last-second win in December, thanks a three-pointer from junior Morgan Zabel.

About MSUM
MSUM (14-10) dropped two games on the road last weekend, falling to St. Cloud State, 69-57, despite 12 points from senior Marisa Yernatich, and Minnesota-Duluth, 54-50, despite 15 points from junior Haley Thomforde.

Junior Megan Strese leads the Dragons at 14.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Junior Morgan Zabel is at 12.5 points per game, while Yernatich is at 12.2 points per contest. Thomforde leads with 3.0 assists per game while senior Kaycee Charette leads with 36 steals. As a team, MSUM scores 65.6 points per game and shoots 39.3 percent from the field. The Dragons outrebound their opponents, 39.8-35.5, and allow 64.3 points per game.

Karla Nelson is in her 13th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 222-147.

About Mary
Mary is 16-10 overall and 11-9 in the NSIC. The Marauders split at home last weekend, beating Minnesota-Crookston, 80-56 before losing to Bemidji State, 76-73.

Ali Collins leads Mary at 15.0 points per game, while Shaunna Knife is at 12.5 points per game.  Knife leads the Marauders at 8.5 rebounds per game, while Collins leads at 4.9 assists and 61 steals.  As a team, Mary scores 72 points per game and shoots 42.1 percent. The Marauders outrebound their opponents, 43.2-38.7 and allow 63.8 points per game.

Rick Neumann is in his first season as Mary's head coach with a record of 16-10 at the school.

About Minot State
The Beavers are 12-12 overall and 8-12 in the NSIC. They split at home last weekend, losing to Bemidji State, 81-70 before beating Minnesota-Crookston, 67-65.

Junior Carly Boag leads Minot State at 18.6 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. Sacarra Molina averages 12.8 points per game and leads the team at 2.5 assists per game. Minot State averages 65.5 points per game and shoots 40.2 percent from the field. The Beavers are being outrebounded by a slight margin, 38.4-38.7, and allow 66.6 points per game.

Sheila Green Gerding is in her 18th season as Minot State's head coach with a record of 314-210 at the school.

Preseason Poll
MSUM was picked to finish 11th in the NSIC in a polling of the league's coaches. The Dragons were picked to finish fourth in the NSIC's North Division.

Yernatich Adds to Three-Point Record
Senior Marisa Yernatich has set the standard for three-point shooting during her career for MSUM, and has the record to prove it. Yernatich now has 189 three-pointers for her career and holds the all-time record.  She tied the single-game school record she had set previously with seven 3-pointers in the 71-65 win over Minnesota-Crookston on Jan. 4.
