Dragon Women to Host Sioux Falls in Opening Round of NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team opens Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament play at home on Wednesday against the University of Sioux Falls. The first-round matchup begins at 6 p.m. at Alex Nemzek Hall in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM (15-11, 12-10 NSIC) is the No. 3 seed from the NSIC's North Division while Sioux Falls (12-14, 9-13 NSIC) is the No. 6 seed from the south.

The Dragons will meet the Cougars – newcomers to the NSIC and Division II -- for the first time ever in the postseason and just for the second time in history. MSUM won the previous meeting, 73-65 on Jan. 18, 2013, thanks to 20 points from senior Kaycee Charette.

About MSUM
MSUM (15-11) split two games to conclude the regular season. The Dragons saw a rally fall short against Mary, 81-79 on Feb. 22 despite a career-high 26 points from junior Megan Strese. A night later, junior Morgan Zabel scored 20 points to lead MSUM to a 74-61 win over Minot State, which clinched a first-round home game for MSUM.

Strese leads the Dragons at 14.2 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Zabel is at 12.8 points per game, while senior Marisa Yernatich is at 12.2 points per contest. Junior Haley Thomforde leads with 3.4 assists per game and also leads with 38 steals. As a team, MSUM scores 66.4 points per game and shoots 39.6percent from the field. The Dragons outrebound their opponents, 40.4-35.0, and allow 64.8 points per game.

Karla Nelson is in her 13th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 223-147.

About Sioux Falls
Sioux Falls finished the regular season with a 12-14 mark. The Cougars were swept on the road last weekend, losing at Minnesota State, 84-67 and Concordia-St. Paul, 76-47.

Two Cougars average in double figures – Laura Johnson at 13.1 points per game and Alyssa Rushton at 10.4. Johnson leads with rebounding (8.5 per game),assists (2.5) and total steals (33). As a team, Sioux Falls shoots 38.6 percent from the field and scores 63.6 points per game. The Cougars are being outrebounded, 38.5-37.7 and allow 66.3 points per game.

Travis Traphagen is in his sixth season as USF's head coach with a record of 98-50 at the school.

Yernatich Closing in on 200 Three-Pointers
Senior Marisa Yernatich has set the standard for three-point shooting during her career for MSUM, and has the record to prove it. Yernatich now has 194 three-pointers for her career and holds the all-time record.  She tied the single-game school record she had set previously with seven 3-pointers in the 71-65 win over Minnesota-Crookston on Jan. 4.
