Dragon Men to Square Off With No. 7 Minnesota State in NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament Quarterfinals

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team will face No. 7-ranked Minnesota State, Mankato in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health Tournament quarterfinals at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Mankato, Minn.

The Dragons (19-10) opened with an 87-78 win over Southwest State on Wednesday, while Minnesota State, Mankato (23-4) rolled to an 86-60 win over Minnesota-Crookston.

Mankato leads the series with MSUM 80-29, including beating the Dragons, 87-64 in January in Mankato, Minn.

About MSUM
The Dragons earned a hard-fought 87-78 win over Southwest Minnesota State on Wednesday.  Sophomore Jordan Riewer had 21 points, while senior Alex Novak had 20 points and 17 rebounds.

Senior Anthony Tucker leads MSUM at 19.4 points per game. Senior Alex Novak averages 13.4 points per game and leads the team in rebounding (9.7 per game) and blocks (47).  Riewer is at 11.3 points per game, while sophomore Tyler Vaughan is at 10.1. Tucker also leads with 123 assists. As a team, MSUM shoots 48.2 percent from the field and scores 75.6 points per game. The Dragons outrebound their opponents, 37.4-31.9 and allow 68.0 points per game on defense.

Chad Walthall is in his third season at MSUM with a record of 55-32 at the school.

About Minnesota State
No. 7-ranked Minnesota State, Mankato rolled to an 86-60 win over Minnesota-Crookston in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament on Wednesday. Zach Monaghan led Mankato with 18 points.

Jarvis Williams leads Mankato at 14.0 points per game, while Assem Marel is at 13.0. Monaghan averages 12.4 points per game. Marel leads at 6.9 rebounds per game, while Monaghan averages 5.7 assists per game.  Mankato shoots 49.2 percent from the field and scores an NSIC-best 79 points per game. The Mavericks outrebound their opponents 38.1-28.7 and allow 66.9 points per game.

Matt Margenthaler is in his 12th season as Mankato's head coach with a record of 249-109 at the school.

Climbing the Charts
Novak became MSUM's all-time leader in career rebounds during the win over Minot State. He is now at 1,045 for his career, and is also the school's all-time leader in blocks with 222. Novak is also at 1,206 points, and is one of just two Dragon players with 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 points for his career.  Novak  also finished second all-time in the NSIC in career rebounds with 806, trailing only leader Gus Johnson (819) of Winona State in that category.

Tucker also surpassed 1,000 points for his college basketball career at Mankato and is at 1,252 points for his career, which includes time at Iowa and Winona State.
