Dragon Volleyball Team Tops Mary in 4

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Freshman Brianna Atkins and sophomore Kaitlin VanWinkle each had 11 kills to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team to a 25-17, 25-14, 17-25, 25-10 win over Mary in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM improved to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC, while Mary fell to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the league.

Atkins hit a career-best .588 for the match, committing just one error in 17 attacks. VanWinkle hit a solid .290 as well. Sophomore Morgan Gradishar added nine kills and 11 digs, while sophomore Casie Baer had 21 set assists. Junior Sam Sullivan had 20 set assists and 12 digs.. Sophomore Abby Wolpern had 15 digs along with seven kills for MSUM.

The Dragons had 53 kills compared to 29 for Mary, and had 74 digs to the Marauders' 57.

MSUM held a 16-14 lead in the opening set but outscored Mary 9-3 the rest of the way to secure a 25-17 win. That last surge was sparked by two kills from Gradishar and kills from junior Annie Palmquist, junior Maggie Gruber and Atkins.

The Dragons stormed out to an 8-2 lead in the secodn set, thanks to a six-point serving run by Sullivan. Gruber, Palmquist and Atkins had kills during the run for MSUM. Mary cut the lead to 12-8, but MSUM responded with a decisive 8-2 run to build a 20-10 lead. Gruber had two kills and a service ace while Atkins and VanWinkle had kills. The Dragons were never threatened in a 25-14 win.

Mary turned the tables with a 25-17 win in the third set, but the Dragons quickly rebounded in the fourth set. They surged to an 11-3 lead -- in part because of kills from five different players -- and were never challenged in a 25-10 win. MSUM hit .583 in the final set with VAnWinkle, Gradishar and Atkins each recording four kills.

Juniors Maggie Gruber and Annie Palmquist had seven kills each as well for MSUM. Gruber also had 10 digs. Freshman Katie Meyers had 13 digs.

MSUM plays host to Northern State on Tuesday night for another NSIC match beginning at 7 p.m. at Alex Nemzek Hall.
