MSUM Football Team Entertains Golden Bears for Homecoming

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead football team is back in action at home on Saturday when it entertains Concordia-St. Paul. The game, which is MSUM's Homecoming game, begins at 2 p.m. at Alex Nemzek Stadium in Moorhead, Minn.

Concordia-St. Paul is 2-1 overall and in the NSIC, while MSUM is 0-3.

Head Coaches
Steve Laqua is in his third season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 3-22, while Ryan Williams is in his third season as Concordia's head coach with a record of 10-15.

Series History
MSUM will meet Concordia-St. Paul for a 10th time, with the Golden Bears holding an 8-1 lead in the series. The two teams have not met since 2009. MSUM's only win in the series came in 2006, when the Dragons edged the Golden Bears 20-18.

About MSU Moorhead
The Dragons fell to 0-3 on the year with a 65-21 setback at Winona State on Sept. 21. Despite the loss, there were several bright spots for MSUM, including sophomore receiver Preston Prince, who caught five passes for 118 yards and a touchdown, and also rushed for 35 yards. Including 141 yards on kick returns, Prince finished the day with 294 all-purpose yards. Sophomore quarterback Jake Hodge threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 76 yards and a touchdown.  On defense, redshirt freshmen Jesse Beilke had nine tackles, while junior Lomumba Ismail had eight tackles and a fumble recovery.

On offense, the Dragons are led by Prince, who has 14 catches for 201 yards and three touchdowns. Hodge has thrown for 273 yards and three touchdowns, and also rushed for 136 yards and three touchdowns in two starts. Sophomore receiver Adam Jiskra has 12 catches for 197 yards and two scores. MSUM is averaging 23 points per game on offense; the Dragons are rushing for 135.7 yards per game and throwing for 214.

MSUM's defense is led by redshirt freshman linebacker Aaron Bohl and sophomore cornerback Chris Binford, each of whom have 24 tackles.  Ismail has 21 tackles.  The Dragon defense allows 44.3 points per game and surrenders 311.7 yards per game on the ground; teams are throwing for 196.7 yards per game against MSUM.

About Winona State
Concordia-St. Paul is 2-1 on the year after suffering a 34-3 home loss to St. Cloud State on Sept. 21. The Golden Bears opened with wins over Minot State (29-0) and Bemidji State (17-14) before the home loss to SCSU.

The Golden Bears' ground game is led by Tre Spears, who has rushed for 340 yards and a touchdown in three games, while junior quarterback Jared Russo has thrown for 488 yards and five touchdowns.  Cordell Smith has been one of the top receivers for the team with seven catches for 141 yards and two scores.  Concordia's offense averages 16.3 points per game; the Golden Bears rush for 151.7 yards per game and throw for 162.7 yards per contest.

Mike Willett and Josh Trifunov lead the Golden Bear defense with 23 tackles each.  Concordia allows 16.0 points per game (second-best in the NSIC); teams are rushing for 110 yards per game against the Golden Bears, while teams are throwing for 151.7.

Catching On

Sophomore Preston Prince has emerged as a multi-purpose threat for MSUM. He leads the team in receptions (14), receiving yards (201), receiving touchdowns (three) and receiving yards per game (67.0). He is also averaging 5.9 yards per carry on the ground and 19.4 yards per kick return. Prince is
fourth in the NSIC in all-purpose yardage per game (139.0).
tied for eighth in the NSIC at 4.67 receptions per game.

2013 Schedule
MSUM's 2013 campaign features five home games and six on the road. Currently, two of MSUM's upcoming opponents -- Minnesota Duluth (13th) and St. Cloud State (20th) - are ranked in the AFCA Division II Top 25.

MSUM's captains for 2013 are senior linebacker Sam Callahan and junior linebacker Lomumba Ismail.

Atop the NSIC...
MSUM leads the NSIC in a unique statistical category -- opponents penalties. Opponents are averaging 91.0 yards per game in penalties against MSUM in 2013. The Dragons are committing only 61.7 yards per game in penalties.

Bohl-ed Over
Redshirt freshman linebacker Aaron Bohl made his second start of his collegiate career against SMSU and made his presence felt.  He had a game-high -- and career-high -- 15 tackles against the Mustangs.  He had four solo tackles and 11 assists, and also had 1.5 tackles for loss. Bohl also shares the NSIC lead with two forced fumbles.  For the season Bohl shares the team lead with sophomore Chris Binford with 24 tackles.

Century Club
Junior Brandon Schell rushed for a career-high 130 yards in the Week 2 loss to SMSU. He was MSUM's first 100-yard rusher since sophomore Zayne Medhaug accomplished the feat during the Dragons' 35-13 rout of Minnesota-Crookston on Oct. 13, 2012. Medhaug rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown.

Homecoming Under Laqua
The Dragons are 1-1 in homecoming games under Head Coach Steve Laqua.  In 2011, the Dragons beat Minnesota Crookston, 29-22 in overtime, and a year ago, fell to Northern State, 45-7.

The 2013 Dragon football games can be heard on a new radio home this year, 106.1 FM The Thunder. Steve d'Eustachio and Larry Scott return to call the action.

Home Grown
The MSUM football team's roster is represented by seven states, with Minnesota leading the way with 42, athletes, followed by North Dakota with 18.

Turnover Margin
MSU ranks tied for seventh in the NSIC with a turnover margin of plus-1. However, MSUM is tied for first in fumbles forced (six) and tied for fourth overall in turnovers forced (seven.).
