Dragon Women Open New Year at Sioux Falls and SMSU

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team gets back in action with a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference road games. The Dragons open the week at the University of Sioux Falls on Friday (6 p.m. start) and end the weekend at Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday (5 p.m. start).
 
MSUM enters the week at 6-4 overall and 2-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

MSUM and USF will meet for a third time with the Dragons leading the series 2-0. MSUM won both meetings a year ago, including a 62-50 win in the NSIC tournament last year.  The Dragons and SMSU will meet for a 77th time with the Mustangs holding a 42-34 lead. MSUM won the lone meeting in 2012-13 in Moorhead, Minn., by a 72-62 score.

About MSUM
The Dragons are 6-4 overall and 2-4 in the NSIC. In their last action on Dec. 21, 2013, MSUM fell at Northern State, 70-45, thanks to a season-low 20.8 percent shooting effort from the field.

Senior forward Morgan Zabel leads the Dragons at 15.0 points per game. Senior forward Megan Strese is averaging 12.1 points and a team-best 6.3 rebounds per game, while sophomore guard Meghan Roehrich is averaging 13.8 points per game. Senior guard Haley Thomforde is averaging 3.8 assists per game. Zabel leads with 12 steals while Thomforde has 10 blocks.

The Dragons are shooting 42.0 percent from the field, including 36.4 percent from three-point range. The Dragons outrebound their opponents 39.8-32.6. MSUM scores 74.0 points per game. The Dragons allow 69.2 points per game and are holding teams to 41.8 percent shooting from the field this season.

Karla Nelson is her 14th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 230-152 at the school.

About Sioux Falls
Sioux Falls is 6-4 overall and 2-4 in the NSIC. The Cougars beat SMSU, 66-53 in their last action on Dec. 21 thanks to a 20-point effort from Jaicee Ulmer. The win ended a four-game losing streak for USF.

Senior Laura Johnson paces USF at 14.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Taylor Varsho averages 14.0 points per game while Ulmer is at 11.5. Chrissy Strassburg has 32 assists while Varsho leads with 19 steals.

The Cougars score 71.7 points per game and are shooting 39.3 percent from the field. USF is being outrebounded by its foes, 40.2-38.9. Teams are scoring 66.4 points per game against Sioux Falls and are shooting 39.8 percent from the field.

Travis Traphagen is in his sixth season as USF's head coach with a record of 104-56 at the school.

About SMSU
SMSU is 2-8 overall and 0-6 in the NSIC. The Mustangs, who face Northern State on Friday night prior to facing MSUM,  have lost eight games in a row, including a 66-53 home setback to Sioux Falls on Dec. 21, 2013. Hannah Beeler led SMSU with 12 points.

Alison Nagel leads SMSU at 16.2 points per game while Bree Holleman averages 10.7 for the Mustangs. Nagel is averaging 6.2 rebounds per game as well. Mikayla Saathoff averages 4.2 assists per game while also sharing the team lead with Holleman with 12 steals.

The Mustangs are scoring 63.8 points per game and are shooting 39.6 percent from the field. They are being outrebounded 39.1-36.1. Teams are scoring 65.9 points per game against the Mustangs.

Allison Kruger is in her fourth season as SMSU's head coach with a record 19-72 at the school.

Roehrich's Rise
Sophomore guard Meghan Roehrich is having a breakout season for the Dragons. She is second on the team in scoring at 13.8 points per game. Roehrich is ranked seventh in all of Division II in free-throw percentage (93.9), a mark that leads the NSIC. The Fargo, N.D., native is also eighth in the nation in field-goal percentage (50.0). She scored in double figures in eight straight games, which is the longest streak on the team in the season.
