Dragon Women Aim to Rebound at Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team wraps up a season-long stretch of four straight road games this week.  MSUM starts the week on Friday on Minnesota Duluth at 6 p.m. and concludes the weekend on Saturday at St. Cloud State (4 p.m.).

MSUM is 9-7 overall and 5-7 in the NSIC.  ??MSUM and Minnesota Duluth will meet for a 76th time with the Bulldogs holding a 49-26 series lead. The Bulldogs won both meetings a year ago. St. Cloud State leads the series with MSUM 30-18 and swept the Dragons in 2012-13.

About MSUM
The Dragons dropped a pair of games on the road last weekend, falling to Bemidji State, 64-53 and Minnesota Crookston, 65-63 to fall to 9-7 overall and 5-7 in the NSIC.

Senior Morgan Zabel, who recently surpassed 900 career points, leads the Dragons at 14.4 points per game. Senior forward Megan Strese is averaging 11.7 points and a team-best 8.0 rebounds per game, while sophomore guard Meghan Roehrich is averaging 11.8 points per game. Senior guard Haley Thomforde, who is now ninth all-time in assists in school history (297), is averaging 3.3 assists per game. Zabel leads with 18 steals while Thomforde has 10 blocks.

The Dragons are shooting 39.9 percent from the field, including 35.1 percent from three-point range. The Dragons outrebound their opponents 41.9-33.6. MSUM scores 70.8 points per game. The Dragons allow 68.3 points per game and are holding teams to 40.3 percent shooting from the field this season.

Karla Nelson is her 14th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 233-155 at the school.

About Minnesota Duluth
Minnesota Duluth is 9-7 overall and 6-6 in the NSIC. The Bulldogs lost two games on the road last weekend, falling at Minot State, 84-66 and Mary, 74-65.

Hannah Rutten leads the Bulldogs at 14.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, while Katrina Newman averages 13.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Danielle Flood averages 11.3 points per game and also leads with 49 assists. Rutten has 29 steals.

The Bulldogs average 72.8 points per game and are shooting 40.8 percent from the field. The Bulldogs outrebound their opposition 37.6-34.3. Teams are scoring 71.2 points per game against UMD this season.

Annette Wiles is in her sixth season as UMD's head coach with a record of 92-65 at the school.

About St. Cloud State
St. Cloud State is 10-6 overall and 6-6 in the NSIC.  The Huskies split on the road last weekend, falling to Mary, 86-80 before beating Minot State, 86-73. SCSU has lost five of its last seven games.

Jessica Benson leads St. Cloud State at 17.0 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. Sam Price scores 14.9 points per game while Rachael Moen averages 11.1 points per game and has 70 assists. Benson leads with 39 steals.

The Huskies score 80.6 points per game and shoot 45.3 percent from the field. St. Cloud State outrebounds its foes, 36.0-34.2 and teams are scoring 76.0 points per game against the Huskies this season.

Lori Fish is in her sixth season as St. Cloud State's head coach with a record of 86-68 at the school.

Strese Hits 1,000
Senior Megan Strese became the Dragons' 20th player to reach 1,000 career points during MSUM's loss to No. 17 Minnesota State. Strese scored less than two minutes into the game to surpass 1,000 for her career. She now has 1,032 career points and is the first Dragon to reach the milestone since Angie Jetvig.

Dragons Rank in Free Throws
MSUM ranks ninth in the nation in free-throw percentage at 77.5 percent. Junior Meghan Roehrich leads the way at 89.1 percent, a mark that is 24th-best in the nation.

Ruling the Boards
The Dragons are proving to be an effective rebounding team in 2013-14. They ranked 16th in the nation in rebounding margin (+8.3), thanks in part to the work on the boards from senior forward Megan Strese, who leads the team at 8.0 rebounds per game.
