Dragon Men Outlast St. Cloud State in OT, 95-88

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball opened overtime on a 10-2 run on its way to an 95-88 overtime win over St. Cloud State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday night in St. Cloud, Minn.

MSUM improved to 14-4 overall and 10-4 in the NSIC with the win, while St. Cloud State fell to 13-5 overall and 9-5 in the league. MSUM is now alone in second place in the NSIC's North Division, just one game behind Bemidji State, and a game ahead of third place schools St. Cloud State and Northern State.

Junior guard Jordan Riewer led MSUM with 21 points and four assists, while sophomore guard Tyler Vaughan added 19 points. Senior guard Tarell Clark added 18 points and 12 assists, while sophomore center Isaac Sevlie added 10 points. Junior guard Prescott Williams added 11 rebounds to go with nine points.

MSUM shot 47.9 percent (35-of-73) from the field for the game, compared to 41.4 percent (29-of-70) for St. Cloud State. The Dragons had a commanding 52-34 edge in rebounds, including 15-7 in offensive rebounds. The Dragons' bench outscored St. Cloud State 24-11.

The run to open the overtime frame – which gave MSUM an 86-78 lead -- was keyed by four points from Riewer, along with two points each from Sevlie, Williams and freshman Aaron Lien. St. Cloud State got no closer than five the rest of the way.

The Dragons led 17-12 in the early moments but St. Cloud State took a 20-17 lead with an 8-0 run.  The Huskies led by three at halftime, 44-41.

Clark had 14 points in the first half for MSUM, which shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

St. Cloud State built a 61-51 lead with 10:53 left in regulation, but the Dragons responded promptly with seven straight points – including a three-pointer from Vaughan – to cut the lead to 61-58.

The Dragons regained the lead at 68-67 on a Sevlie layup, and from there, the teams exchanged the lead four times. Vaughan hit a three-pointer to put the Dragons up 76-73, but a three-point play from Matt Craggs tied the game at 76-76.  Both teams had chances to go ahead late in regulation but missed shots, leaving the score deadlocked at 76-76.

MSUM outscored the Huskies 19-12 in the extra frame to earn the win.

Lien and junior Malik Wood both contributed six points off the bench for the Dragons.

The Dragons start a four-game homestand Friday against Upper Iowa.

Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: Tonight was the first time the Dragons won in St. Cloud since beating the Huskies 54-52 on Dec. 8, 1983. Mike Bednarek pumped in 15 points to lead the offensive attack and Moorhead native Lawson Stephenson had 10 rebounds in the victory.
