MSUM Women to Host Golden Bears and Mavericks in Key NSIC Contests

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team returns home to face two of the top teams in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference this week. The Dragons host Concordia-St. Paul at 6 p.m. on Friday and then conclude the weekend with a contest against No. 17-ranked Minnesota State, Mankato at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
 
Concordia and Minnesota State are tied for second in the league with Northern State with 6-2 record, just one game behind leader Wayne State (Neb.). MSUM enters the week at 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the NSIC and has climbed back into a tie for sixth in the league, thanks to winning four of its last five games.

MSUM and Concordia will meet for a 34 th time, with the Golden Bears leading the series 20-13. The Dragons will meet Minnesota State for a 35 th time with the Mavericks holding a 20-14 series lead. MSUM lost to both teams on the road last year.

About MSUM
The Dragons improved to 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the NSIC with a pair of road wins last week. Senior Morgan Zabel scored 18 points and hit the game-winning basket in the Dragons' 68-67 win over Sioux Falls on Friday. A night later, senior guard Haley Thomforde tied a career-high with 17 points to help MSUM rout Southwest Minnesota State, 70-52.

Zabel leads the Dragons at 15.3 points per game. Senior forward Megan Strese is averaging 11.5 points and a team-best 6.8 rebounds per game, while sophomore guard Meghan Roehrich is averaging 12.9 points per game. Thomforde is averaging 3.8 assists per game. Zabel leads with 14 steals while Thomforde has 10 blocks.

The Dragons are shooting 42.2 percent from the field, including 36.4 percent from three-point range. The Dragons outrebound their opponents 40.8-32.3. MSUM scores 73.2 points per game. The Dragons allow 67.6 points per game and are holding teams to 41.1 percent shooting from the field this season.

Karla Nelson is her 14th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 232-152 at the school.

About Concordia-St. Paul
Concordia-St. Paul is 11-4 overall and 6-2 in the NSIC. The Golden Bears recorded two wins at home last weekend, beating Minnesota Duluth, 95-63, thanks to 23 points from Ameshia Kearney, and then topping St. Cloud State, 67-61, thanks to 19 points from Carissa Wolyniec.
 
Junior Anika Whiting averages 16.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game to lead Concordia-St. Paul. Senior Rachel Hansen averages 13.3 points and a team-best 5.1 assists per game. Wolyniec (11.1 points per game) and Kearney (10.2) also average in double figures for the Golden Bears.
 
Concordia scores 70.6 points per game and shoots 40.8 percent from the field, including 32.7 percent from three-point range.  The Golden Bears are being outrebounded by their opposition, 41.5-36.7. They are allowing 65.4 points per game and teams are shooting 38.6 percent from the field against them.
 
Paul Fessler is in his 14 th season as Concordia-St. Paul's head coach with a record of 289-123 at the school.

About Minnesota State
Minnesota State is 9-3 overall and 6-2 in the NSIC. The Mavericks, who will face Northern State prior to facing MSUM, have won three in a row, including wins over St. Cloud State (100-66) and Minnesota Duluth (69-63) last weekend. Senior forward Ali Wilkinson led the Mavericks with 19 points in the win over St. Cloud State and also led with 21 points in the win over UMD.
 
Wilkinson leads MSU at 20.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, while Karlee Gengenbacher averages 11.4 points per game. Aubrey Davis averages 4.4 assists per game while Alli Hoefer averages nearly two steals per game.
 
The Mavericks lead the NSIC at 84.9 points per game and are shooting 45 percent from the field, including 37.8 percent from three-point range. Minnesota State outrebounds its opponents 40.2-37.5 and is allowing 69.4 points per game. Teams are shooting 39.6 percent against the Mavericks this season.
 
Emilie Thiesse is in her second season as Minnesota State's head coach with a record of 35-9 at the school.

Roehrich's Rise
Sophomore guard Meghan Roehrich is having a breakout season for the Dragons. She is second on the team in scoring at 12.9 points per game. Roehrich is ranked 15th in all of Division II in free-throw percentage (92.5), a mark that leads the NSIC. The Fargo, N.D., native is also 12th in the nation in field-goal percentage (48.0). She scored in double figures in eight straight games, which is the longest streak on the team in the season.
 
Seniors Spark Win over SMSU
MSUM's three seniors – Megan Strese, Haley Thomforde and Morgan Zabel – delivered big in a 70-52 win at SMSU last Saturday. The three combined for 44 points, 17 rebounds and five assists in the win. Thomforde tied a career-high with 17 points in Saturday's win while Zabel added 16 points. Strese led with nine rebounds.
 
Great Time for Career High
Freshman guard Natalie Van Wyhe picked a perfect time to deliver a career-high during MSUM's one-point win at Sioux Falls on Friday. Van Wyhe scored a career-high 12 points – hitting 4-of-4 three-pointers – to spark the  the Dragons off the bench. The points proved valuable in the Dragons' 68-67 victory.
